Although Pencak Silat has only recently begun to develop in recent years, Cao Bang has made significant progress, especially in training young athletes. One of the highlights was its performance at the 2025 National Youth Pencak Silat Championship last June. This tournament attracted 527 athletes from various provinces, cities, and sectors across the country to compete in the Tanding (sparring) category in three age groups: 12-13 (10 weight classes for men and 8 for women); 14-16 (12 weight classes for men, 10 for women); and 17-20 (11 weight classes for men and 8 for women).
The Cao Bang delegation had 21 athletes participating and won 4 gold medals and 5 bronze medals; including 3 athletes who achieved national level 1 and 6 athletes who achieved national level 2. Notably, the 14-16 age group from Cao Bang excelled, winning 3 gold medals and 2 bronze medals, ranking third overall, after Quang Ninh and An Giang . This achievement demonstrates the remarkable progress of young Cao Bang martial artists, reflecting the quality of training and investment in this martial art in the locality, considering that the mountainous province's achievement at this tournament in 2020 was only 1 gold medal and 1 bronze medal.
Previously, the Cao Bang team won a gold medal at the National Pencak Silat Championship in April. In 2022, the National Pencak Silat Club Championship was held in Cao Bang, demonstrating the local interest in this martial art. These increasingly promising achievements show the foundation for the development of Pencak Silat in the province, especially in building a team of promising young athletes.
According to martial arts coach Bui Thi Hung, athletes from Cao Bang have been training in Pencak Silat since 2016 with great enthusiasm, accumulating considerable experience. At the Provincial Sports and Arts Training and Competition Center, Pencak Silat athletes practice diligently together every afternoon. This seriousness and hard work in daily training has helped Pencak Silat become one of Cao Bang's key sports, resulting in numerous medal wins in recent years.
According to statistics, in 2024 alone, Pencak Silat brought in 22 gold medals, 16 silver medals, and 30 bronze medals, contributing significantly to the high-performance sports of Cao Bang province. Among them, Nong Hai Van stands out and is expected to help Cao Bang Pencak Silat assert its position and make breakthroughs in the future. The female martial artist, born in 2009, is the first Cao Bang native to win a world gold medal in this sport at the 2024 World Youth Pencak Silat Championships. Her achievement not only brings glory to the province's sports but also proves that Cao Bang can produce world-class athletes if it has the right investment strategy.
The commendable achievements provide a positive foundation for the development of Pencak Silat in Cao Bang. This can attract the community, encourage more people to participate in training, and expand the movement, especially among young people. Along with this, the local government will pay more attention to investing in facilities, upgrading equipment, and organizing provincial-level tournaments to create opportunities for competition. However, to maintain and improve the quality of athletes, Cao Bang needs to develop a professional coaching team and learn from the experience of localities strong in Pencak Silat development through programs such as training exchanges or cooperation... thereby transforming potential into a driving force for sustainable development.
