Dutch midfielder accused of smuggling more than 1 ton of cocaine

Dutch prosecutors say Quincy Promes is being prosecuted for drug trafficking. The 31-year-old was involved in smuggling 1.36 tonnes of cocaine into the Netherlands. Two shipments of cocaine were intercepted before they entered Amsterdam at the port of Antwerp, Belgium.

The incident took place in January 2020. Promes' trial is scheduled for next Monday. However, ANP news agency reported that Promes is not expected to attend to avoid legal trouble. The lawyer declined all questions from the press but will still be present to defend his client.

In July 2020, Quincy Promes attacked his cousin with a knife at a family party. The cousin suffered a knee injury and reported the incident to the authorities. In December 2020, the police detained Promes for investigation.

The prosecutors are asking for a two-year prison sentence for the Dutchman. The court will hold another hearing to hear the case. The hearing is expected to take place next week. Promes' lawyer will answer questions from the media during the hearing.

Quincy Promes is currently playing for Spartak Moscow (Russia). He has been playing regularly in recent times. This player has a contract until 2024.

Quincy Promes was once a bright talent of Dutch football. The player born in 1992 played for the Netherlands at Euro 2021. In 50 appearances for the team, Promes scored 7 goals. At the club level, Promes made his mark in the colors of Ajax, Twente and Sevilla. He helped Erik Ten Hag's Ajax reach the semi-finals of the 2018/19 Champions League.
