Goal.com revealed the nominees for the 2023 Ballon d'Or award immediately after the Champions League final – Manchester City's 1-0 victory over Inter Milan. Superstar Messi is leading the nominations thanks to his 2022 World Cup win, while Erling Haaland is in second place and striker Kylian Mbappe in third.
Messi currently has a 60% chance of winning his eighth Ballon d'Or, according to Diario Sport.
According to Goal : "Haaland had an incredible first season with Man City, winning the treble with the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League titles. Haaland also scored a total of 52 goals and provided 9 assists in 53 games. He won almost all the individual awards in the Premier League such as top scorer, player of the year, as well as top scorer in the Champions League."
However, Haaland lost a significant amount of ground on Man City's Champions League winning journey, failing to score in both semi-final matches against Real Madrid and playing rather poorly in the final against Inter Milan.
While Messi had a brilliant 2022 World Cup winning campaign, almost single-handedly leading Argentina to victory, scoring 7 goals and providing 3 assists. In the final against France, the superstar also scored 2 goals and was the inspiration for "Albiceleste" to win in the penalty shootout. Messi's only downside this season with PSG was winning Ligue 1, but he finished the season with statistics still in the top 5 European leagues, scoring 21 goals and providing 20 assists in 41 matches," Goal commented.
Haaland played a key role in winning the Champions League.
As for Mbappe, the French national team and PSG star also had a brilliant 2022 World Cup, scoring a hat-trick in the final against Argentina and winning the Golden Boot, but only finishing as runner-up. At PSG, he only won the Ligue 1 title and the Golden Boot. Therefore, he is considered to be at a disadvantage compared to Messi and Haaland in the race for the 2023 Ballon d'Or.
Forward Julian Alvarez (Manchester City and Argentina national team), who made history as the first player to win the World Cup and the treble in the same season, is also among the top 10 nominees for the 2023 Ballon d'Or. The remaining players are Vinicius, Kevin De Bruyne, Victor Osimhen, Karim Benzema, Kvaratskhelia, and Robert Lewandowski.
