According to a representative of Hanoi Electricity Corporation (EVNHANOI), since the beginning of the year, unfavorable hydrological developments and the impact of the El Nino phenomenon have seriously affected the operations of hydropower plants.

By the end of May 2023, the remaining converted electricity output in the hydropower reservoir of the entire system was 2.35 billion kWh, 1.736 billion kWh lower than the annual plan, of which the North alone was 1.23 billion kWh lower.

Notably, 8/12 hydroelectric reservoirs in the North have water levels equal to or close to the dead water level. Some large hydroelectric reservoirs in the North have very low water levels and are at risk of dead water levels if the hydrological situation does not improve, specifically: Son La, Lai Chau , Tuyen Quang, Hua Na, Thac Ba.

Meanwhile, the prolonged hot weather across a large area has increased the demand for electricity. According to statistics from EVNHANOI, the average daily electricity consumption in the whole city in March 2023 was 58,336 million kWh, in April it was 61,542 million kWh but in May it reached 75,406 million kWh. Thus, the average electricity consumption in May 2023 increased by more than 22.5% compared to the average in April 2023.

To ensure stable and safe power supply, EVNHANOI staff must ensure 100% of staff on duty, regularly check transformer stations, and when signs of overload are detected, immediately pull cables and share the load to avoid incidents.

The intense heat has caused electricity consumption in Hanoi to continuously increase.

However, to avoid local overloads that cause interruptions in power supply, the electricity industry recommends that customers and businesses join hands to use electricity economically and effectively, turn off unnecessary electrical equipment and limit the use of high-capacity equipment during peak hours from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and from 8:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. every day, and at the same time, do not use many electrical appliances at the same time to avoid overloading the power grid.

In addition, the electricity industry also reminds customers to regularly clean and maintain equipment to ensure stable operation, increase longevity, and save electricity and costs.

“One very important thing with most electrical appliances in the home is to unplug them when not in use to avoid increasing electricity bills,” the EVNHANOI representative added.
