TikTok has just announced updates to its platform, introducing new safety and mental health features for teenagers and families, as part of its Family Pairing suite of useful tools.
According to TikTok representatives, this toolkit helps parents and guardians customize their children's experience on the platform in a flexible and appropriate way.
This is an important first step in fostering healthy conversations between parents and children about how to interact and connect safely in the digital environment.
In its latest update, TikTok introduced a series of upgraded features in "Smart Family" to help parents better understand their children's account activity.
A notable feature of this update is that TikTok has upgraded the tool that displays the list of accounts that teenagers have blocked. Now, this tool allows parents to directly block specific accounts that they deem inappropriate for their children.
When an account is blocked, the user will be unable to interact with teenagers, and content from that account will not appear in their news feeds. Teenagers can still submit unblocking requests, but the final decision rests with the parents.

One of the features currently in testing is sending notifications to parents when their children upload videos, photos, or stories publicly. This facilitates open discussion between parents and teenagers about publicly shared content, without suffocating the creativity or independence of the children.
The platform has also added a feature that allows parents to view the privacy settings their 16-17 year old children are making, such as allowing others to download videos or use the Duet and Stitch features. For users aged 13-15, these options are disabled by default and cannot be changed.

The Manage Topics feature is also being launched for the first time, allowing users to adjust the display frequency of content across more than 10 popular topic categories – from art, travel, and nature to sports .
With this feature, the platform allows parents to see the topics their teenage children (ages 13-19) have chosen to shape their feeds.
A TikTok representative said the platform has heard from teenagers who want adults to pay attention to their digital lives and recognize their importance to them.
With better insight into content preferences, families can connect through topics they share on TikTok, as well as content and creators that excite and inspire the whole family.
