
On the evening of December 5 at Hoan Kiem Theater (Hanoi), the 5th annual VinFuture Global Science and Technology Awards officially named outstanding scientists and works.

This is the 5th season of the VinFuture Prize honoring breakthrough inventions and technologies that contribute to improving the quality of life of millions of people and promoting the development of many industries and services of important significance to humanity.

At the VinFuture 2025 Award Ceremony, Professor Richard Henry Friend - Chairman of the VinFuture Award Council, said the event was a special occasion to look back on the 5-year journey of the VinFuture Foundation - a journey guided by the vision of bringing science to serve humanity.

Speaking at the award ceremony, National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man acknowledged and highly appreciated the persistent efforts of the founders of VinFuture Foundation who have devoted large resources to developing the award, contributing to spreading the humanistic values of science and introducing to the world the image of the country and people of Vietnam as rich in humanity and aspirations for development.

From 1,705 nominations from scientists, research organizations and technology businesses worldwide, the VinFuture Prize Council decided to award the main prize worth 3 million USD to Dr. Douglas R. Lowy, Dr. John T. Schiller, Dr. Aimée R. Kreimer and Professor Maura L. Gillison (USA) for their discoveries and development of HPV vaccines to prevent tumors caused by human papillomavirus (HPV).

In addition to the Main Prize, VinFuture 2025 awards three Special Prizes, each worth 500,000 USD, to scientists researching new fields, female scientists, and scientists from developing countries.

The special prize for scientists from developing countries goes to Professor Maria Esperanza Martínez-Romero (Mexico) with her work "For advances in research on microbial ecology and symbiotic nitrogen fixation mechanisms in tropical ecosystems".

The special prize for female scientists was awarded to Professor Mary-Claire King for her discovery of the BRCA1 gene linked to breast and ovarian cancer risk, laying the foundation for genetic testing, screening programmes and personalised treatment.

The Special Prize for Scientists Working in New Fields honoured five scientists: Professor Venkatesan Sundaresan, Professor Raphaël Mercier, Dr. Emmanuel Guiderdon, Dr. Imtiyaz Khanday and Dr. Delphine Mieulet for their innovations in developing self-propagating hybrid crops.

Mash up "Lullaby Country - Phu Dong Thien Vuong" performed by singer Duc Phuc is a unique artistic highlight, combining traditional and modern music. The performance is not only an artistic performance, but also a message: from traditional values, the nation can rise strongly, affirming its position on the world map.

The VinFuture Awards 2025 also featured Alicia Keys - a global music icon, winner of 17 prestigious Grammy awards. Her music carries a strong, steadfast and hopeful spirit, in line with the message "Together we rise - Together we prosper" of this year's awards season as a tribute to scientists and innovators who are persistently creating a progressive life for humanity.
