Ho Chi Minh City agrees on investment policy for Ben Thanh - Can Gio metro

The Ben Thanh - Can Gio Metro Line has been approved for investment by the Standing Committee of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee; the project is expected to start construction on December 19.

According to the conclusion of the Standing Committee of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee on November 5, the Standing Committee agreed on the investment policy of the Ben Thanh - Can Gio railway project. At the same time, the Party Committee of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee was assigned to lead the City People's Committee to direct departments and branches to carefully review the project's investment process and procedures to ensure strict compliance with the process and regulations of the law.

The conclusion affirms that the Ben Thanh - Can Gio railway line is an important project in the development of urban transport and regional connectivity of the city, contributing to the formation of a new strategic traffic axis according to the development orientation in the new period.

The investment in this project aims to meet the needs of passenger transport, create momentum for urban development and promote socio -economic development, in line with the orientation of expanding development space for Ho Chi Minh City.

The Standing Committee's conclusion also noted that during the project implementation process, departments, branches and investors must strictly implement inspection and supervision solutions to ensure the feasibility and progress of the project, and at the same time, have solutions to minimize the impact on protective forests, landscapes, ecology and relics of the City.

At the press conference on the socio-economic situation of Ho Chi Minh City on December 4, the Department of Construction said that the Ben Thanh - Can Gio metro line is expected to start construction on December 19.

The Ben Thanh - Can Gio Metro line is being developed by VinSpeed ​​High-speed Railway Investment and Development Joint Stock Company, starting at September 23rd Park (Ben Thanh Ward), ending at a 39-hectare land plot, adjacent to the Can Gio coastal urban tourism project (Can Gio Commune). There is 1 depot planned to be located in Can Gio Commune and 2 maintenance centers located in Can Gio and Tan Thuan (old District 7).

The metro line is over 54km long, built with double track, 1435mm gauge, designed speed of 350km/h, load capacity of 17 tons/axle; expected travel time from the first station to the last station is about more than 13 minutes.

Total investment is more than 85,650 billion VND, equivalent to about 4 billion USD.

In phase 1, the line has two stations including the first station Ben Thanh and the last station Can Gio. Phase 2 will add 4 more stations (if needed), including Tan Thuan, Tan My, Nha Be, and Binh Khanh stations.

The project passes through 8 communes and wards of the city, including Ben Thanh ward, Xom Chieu ward, Tan Thuan ward, Tan My ward, Nha Be commune, Binh Khanh commune, An Thoi Dong commune and Can Gio commune, with a total land use area of ​​about 317.67 hectares.

The project route starts at Km0+00 in September 23rd Park, runs along the park land parallel to Le Lai Street, reaches Nguyen Thai Hoc Street, then changes direction along Ky Con Street, crosses Ben Nghe Canal to Le Quoc Hung Street.

After passing Xom Chieu market, you will change direction along Nguyen Tat Thanh street to Tan Thuan 2 bridge area to Nguyen Van Linh street through the intersection with Nguyen Thi Thap street (about Km4+950) to Tan My ward.

This route continues to cross the intersection between Nguyen Van Linh Street and Phu My Bridge to Nguyen Luong Bang Street; cross Rach Dia River to Nha Be Commune; cross Soai Rap River to Binh Khanh Commune.

Continue parallel to Ben Luc - Long Thanh expressway, then turn Southeast along Rung Sac road, cross Loi Giang river, Dinh Ba river to the end point in Can Gio urban area - Can Gio commune.

The entire route is expected to have 5 trains, each train has 8 cars with a capacity of 600 passengers using fixed seats, no standing room. The expected frequency of trains is 20 minutes/trip, applied uniformly for both peak and off-peak hours of the day, starting from 6am-11pm every day of the week.

The Ben Thanh – Can Gio railway project is a new transport infrastructure construction investment project, with direct investment. The project is expected to employ about 400 workers after being put into operation.

The project is expected to start construction on December 19 and be completed and put into operation in 2028. Construction and equipment installation will be carried out from the fourth quarter of 2025 to the third quarter of 2027. At the end of 2027, the unit will conduct a trial operation and begin commercial operation in the first quarter of 2028.

The investor said the chosen route goes through the buffer zone of Can Gio Biosphere Reserve without entering the core zone. The Km44+00 route goes to the East, avoiding the boundary of the type I forest protection area.
