The White House announced on September 12 that President Joe Biden will chair a meeting with the leaders of Australia, India, and Japan, members of the Quad group, on September 21 in his hometown of Wilmington, Delaware.
The upcoming summit comes as Biden reviews his foreign policy legacy in the final months of his term, after withdrawing from the re-election race and nominating Kamala Harris as his vice president.
"This will be the first time President Biden has hosted foreign leaders in Wilmington as president, reflecting his deep personal relationships with each Quad leader, as well as the importance of the Quad to all of our nations," White House spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre said in a statement, according to AFP.
The spokesperson added that Biden looked forward to welcoming Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio.
The Quad group has existed since 2007, but President Biden has strongly promoted the alliance in an effort to emphasize international alliances to contain rivals, including China.
He hosted the first Quad leaders' summit at the White House in 2021, and the group has held annual summits since then.
A White House statement said the leaders would focus on "advancing a shared vision of a free and open Indo- Pacific region." The next summit will be hosted by India, according to the White House.
