HCMC: People struggle to prevent high tides

As of 7 p.m. on October 24, authorities and residents of Binh Quoi Ward (HCMC) were still on duty at key points along the Cau Cong canal embankment to prevent high tides from flooding into homes.

Since 4 p.m. on October 24, households have prepared sandbags to reinforce in front of their houses to prevent rising tides.

According to records, Binh Quoi area is located on Thanh Da peninsula, about 5 km from the center of Ho Chi Minh City, surrounded by canals and Saigon river, so it is often affected by high tides.

From 5 p.m. the same day, the high tide from the Saigon River began to rise into the canals. Residents and militia forces of Binh Quoi ward used earthen sacks to reinforce the overflow points.

Mr. Nguyen Duc Quy (residing in Binh Quoi ward) was heartbroken when 4 tons of fish fry in the pond were swept away by the flood tide on the evening of October 23, causing an estimated loss of about 80 million VND.

Mr. Nguyen Thuy Truong, Binh Quoi Ward, sighed and said: “I have lived here for decades, so I am no stranger to high tides. However, last night I saw the tide rise so quickly. Tables, chairs, refrigerators, and televisions were not raised high enough so they were damaged a lot.”

Although he has been running a fishing pond in Binh Quoi for many years, Mr. Do Quoc Su was “caught off guard” when the high tide flooded his pond on the evening of October 23. “I could only stand there and watch the water rush into the pond, helpless. All the fish in the pond were swept away by the water,” Mr. Su said regretfully.

At about 18:40, water from the canals rose and began to flood into residential areas.
