The Hoa Loc Girls' Militia Platoon Monument is a red address for educating the young generation about revolutionary traditions.
In 1964, the US imperialists intensified their attacks on the Lach Truong area and along the Kenh De River to block waterway traffic, hindering the supply of food and weapons from the North to the South. In that situation, the Thanh Hoa Provincial Military Command launched a guerrilla warfare movement, building a People's War posture in almost all localities. The Hoa Loc Commune Military Command (old) selected female militia forces to participate in training with PK 12.7mm machine guns. On May 19, 1967, the Hoa Loc female militia platoon was established, consisting of 14 female militia with 3 PK 12.7mm machine gun batteries and rifles, building a battlefield in the Dong Ngan area. The Hoa Loc female militia fought, worked, produced, built and protected their homeland. Through the periods of struggle, due to the requirements of work, labor and study, the female militia platoon force was regularly adjusted and supplemented to better meet the task of protecting the Fatherland during the increasingly fierce resistance war against the US. The total number of platoon members through 3 rotations and force additions included 35 female militiamen. On June 16, 1967, the Hoa Loc female militia platoon achieved a resounding feat, shooting down an A4D bomber of the US imperialists, being the first guerrilla militia unit in the country to shoot down an enemy aircraft with infantry guns. After feat after feat, on November 2, 1967, an A3J bomber was shot down. On July 30, 1972, an F4H aircraft was shot down. The feat of the Hoa Loc female militia platoon greatly contributed to the common feat of the army and people of the whole country, and was praised by Uncle Ho in a letter; Domestic and international press reported and considered this a symbol of the spirit of Vietnamese women "Heroic, indomitable, loyal, and courageous". The Party and State awarded the title of Hero of the People's Armed Forces, along with many other noble awards. In 1991, Dong Ngan Battlefield in Hoa Loc Historical and Cultural Relic Complex, Hoa Loc Commune, was ranked as a provincial historical and cultural relic.
Recalling the time when the militia girls participated in the war in the past, Mrs. Nguyen Thi Thu, now 78 years old (the captain of the PK 12.7mm machine gun team), currently living with her husband, children and grandchildren in Hoa Loc commune, emotionally shared: “With the spirit of “when the enemy comes, women also fight”, the Hoa Loc militia girls at that time were mostly very young, eighteen or twenty years old, not afraid of hardship, suffering, or sacrifice, they stood up wholeheartedly to volunteer to go to battle and fought very bravely and tenaciously, determined to keep the sacred sky of the Fatherland peaceful. Of the 14 militia girls at that time, only 5 people live in the locality today, some live in other provinces and 3 people have passed away. The lives of the Hoa Loc militia girls at that time are now mostly stable, their children are successful, but there are also some people whose lives are still full of difficulties, with constant illness and diseases, and they do not have enough money for medicine and treatment... However, So, every year on the occasion of the platoon's founding, we remind each other to meet, review the heroic years, share together, encourage each person to live happier, healthier, more useful lives and proudly educate our children to promote the revolutionary tradition, strive to study, work, produce, and build our homeland Hoa Loc in particular and Thanh Hoa province in general to become increasingly prosperous and strong.
To record the achievements of the Hoa Loc Commune Girl Militia Platoon in the resistance war against the US to save the country, Thanh Hoa province and the locality have invested in the Dong Ngan Battlefield Historical Site Project and the Hoa Loc Girl Militia Platoon Monument.
The Dong Ngan Battlefield Historical Site and Hoa Loc Women's Militia Platoon Monument Project started construction in June 2023 (built in Hoa Loc commune with an area of 1.51ha). The project consists of 4 main areas: Foreign affairs area; Dong Ngan battlefield model reconstruction area; monument area (including monument and ceremony yard, experience yard); area to support the promotion of the value of the monument. The main items include: Technical infrastructure construction item (including management, reception, exhibition house; Dong Ngan battlefield model reconstruction area; main gate, side gate; monument introduction sign...). The fine arts item includes the monument. The height of the monument from the base to the top of the statue is 16m. The monument is made of natural granite. The project was implemented by the Hau Loc District Investment and Construction Project Management Board (now the Hau Loc Area Investment and Construction Project Management Board)...
Identifying this as a key project, the locality mobilized the people of Hoa Loc commune to agree and support, promptly complete site clearance, creating favorable conditions for the construction unit to perform its tasks. The Hau Loc area investment and construction project management board increased staff to the construction site to direct and supervise the technical and quality of each project item; regularly held meetings to resolve difficulties and obstacles, speed up the project's construction progress, and put it into use on schedule.
After 2 years of implementation, the Dong Ngan Battlefield Historical Site and the Hoa Loc Women's Militia Platoon Monument have completed all the work. The project was put into use to pay tribute and honor the glorious feat of the heroic Women's Militia Platoon of Hoa Loc commune; to build the monument into a red address for educating revolutionary traditions for the young generation and all classes of people.
