Referee forgot to show red card in Europa League semi-final

VnExpressVnExpress19/05/2023

Spain Referee Danny Makkelie gave a second yellow card but forgot to send off Sevilla's Marcos Acuna on the evening of May 18.

When the second leg of the Sevilla - Juventus semi-final entered the 114th minute, referee Makkelie showed Acuna a yellow card for a slow throw-in. Before that, in the 57th minute, he had given the Sevilla player his first yellow card.

Leandro Paredes, Acuna's Argentina teammate who now plays for Juventus, reminded the referee of his omission to show him a red card. Makkelie then went forward and sent off the Sevilla defender. Before leaving the field, Acuna waved his arms and shouted in protest at the referee's decision.

Playing with one less man in the final minutes, Sevilla still successfully defended the score 2-1. Acuna and his teammates entered the final with a 3-2 victory.

Juventus opened the scoring in the second leg in the 65th minute, but could not maintain their advantage. In the 71st minute, Suso scored a long-range equalizer for Sevilla. The final score was 2-2 after 90 minutes of regulation time, so the two teams had to play two extra periods. Five minutes into the first extra period, another Argentinian player, Erik Lamela, headed in the decisive goal for Sevilla.

With the red card, Acuna will have to sit out the final on May 31. Sevilla's next opponent is Roma, who beat Leverkusen 1-0 in the other semi-final.

Sevilla hold the record for six UEFA Cup/Europa League wins. Meanwhile, Roma manager Jose Mourinho has never lost a European Cup final. He won the 2003 UEFA Cup, the 2004 Champions League with Porto, the 2010 Champions League with Inter, the 2017 Europa League with Man Utd and the 2022 Conference League with Roma.

Paredes and Acuna were both members of the Argentina team that won the 2022 World Cup. They both came off the bench in the final. Paredes scored the third penalty in the 4-2 win over France. He is currently playing for Juventus on a season-long loan from PSG. This season, he has played 32 matches and scored one goal for the "Old Lady". Juventus are currently second in Serie A with 69 points after 35 matches, eight points ahead of fifth-placed AC Milan with three games remaining.

Referee Makkelie has refereed the 2020 Europa League final, two group stage matches, one round of 16 match and one semi-final of Euro 2021 and two group stage matches of the 2022 World Cup.
