China, US, Canada compete to import Vietnamese crab

(Dan Tri) - In the first 5 months of the year, crab exports to China and Hong Kong (China) grew impressively, reaching more than 41 million USD, an increase of 502% over the same period last year.
According to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP), in the past 5 months, Vietnam's live crab and crab exports have grown continuously. In May alone, the export value of this item increased by 62% over the same period in 2023, reaching 22 million USD. In the first 5 months, the export turnover reached more than 97 million USD, an increase of 76%. Notably, the two largest markets, China and Japan, both increased imports of this item. Of which, China is the largest consumer market of live crabs in Vietnam. In May alone, crab and other crustacean exports to China and Hong Kong (China) increased by 418% over the same period, reaching nearly 11 million USD. In the first 5 months, exports to China and Hong Kong (China) reached more than 41 million USD, an increase of 502% over the same period.

Meanwhile, according to data from the Association, exports to Japan have been on a continuous downward trend in the past two months. The export value of crabs and other crustaceans to Japan in May decreased by 9% over the same period, reaching more than 6 million USD. However, thanks to the growth in the first quarter, crab exports to this market in the first 5 months still increased by 7%, reaching nearly 29 million USD. For the Japanese market, Vietnam mainly exports snow crab products such as: snow crab meat, shelled snow crab, snow crab claws and a small part of ground field crab... In addition, crab exports to the US and Canada are also growing positively, with increases of 32% and 54% respectively over the same period. In contrast, exports to EU countries are not very positive, with export value decreasing by 58%. According to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers, the European Commission's continued "yellow card" warning for Vietnam's seafood industry is affecting seafood exports to this market.
