The Chinese Defense Ministry said on its official WeChat account on Sunday that a Chinese fleet, comprising five warships and four helicopters, had left the eastern port of Qingdao and would meet with Russian forces in a "pre-determined area."
On Saturday, the ministry announced that Russian naval and air forces would participate in the exercises taking place in the East Sea.
The Global Times quoted military observers as saying that this would be the first time both Russian forces have participated in the exercise.
The Gromkiy and Overshenniy, two Russian warships participating in the East China Sea exercises, conducted separate training with the Chinese navy in Shanghai earlier this month on formation maneuvering, communication, and maritime rescue.
Chinese Defense Minister Li Shangfu met with the head of the Russian Navy, Admiral Nikolai Yevmenov, in Beijing this month, with both sides reiterating their commitment to strengthening military ties.
Chinese Army Chief of Staff Liu Zhenli and Russian Federation Armed Forces Chief of Staff Valery Gerasimov made similar commitments during an online call in June.
