In recent days, wholesale and traditional markets in Ho Chi Minh City are witnessing the widespread appearance of milk grapes, also known as "Chinese grapes."

It is noteworthy that the fruit, once considered a luxury, with a price of up to 5 million VND/kg, has now become a common commodity, sold everywhere for only a few tens of thousands of VND/kg. This sudden change has not only caused a stir in the market but also raised many concerns from consumers about the quality and origin of the product.

Milk grapes used to be one of the rare fruits imported into Vietnam in very limited quantities. Previously, the price of each kilogram of milk grapes was up to 5 million VND, causing many people to consider carefully before deciding to buy. However, over time, the popularity of this grape has increased significantly, accompanied by a sharp decrease in price. So what led to this change?

According to Mr. Le Hoang Phong, Deputy Director of Hoc Mon Agricultural and Food Wholesale Market, the decline in the price of milk grapes is the result of Chinese producers applying advanced farming technology.

“Previously, milk grapes were produced with a complicated process and in small quantities, leading to high prices. However, thanks to new technology and larger production scales, the price of milk grapes has dropped sharply. Currently, we receive a lot of goods from China at much cheaper prices than before,” he said.

At traditional markets such as Ba Chieu Market, Thi Nghe Market and Tan Dinh Market, bunches of milk grapes priced from only 120,000 to 150,000 VND/kg are sold everywhere. Many traders said that milk grapes are currently selling very well due to their low price and have become a popular item in the markets.

Ms. Minh Sun, a vendor at Thi Nghe market, Binh Thanh district, shared: "Milk grapes are now so cheap, they sell very well. Before, when this type first appeared, people were hesitant to buy them because they were afraid of the high price and strange products. But now these grapes are popular, the price is cheap, so customers buy more. The price was expensive before, sometimes on weekends or on the 15th or 15th of the lunar month, I would buy them to sell to customers. Now that the price is cheap, I sell them every day because customers buy a lot."

“For the past two months, I have been selling these milk grapes because the price is quite cheap, so many customers have asked to buy them. The low price makes them easy to sell. Customers who buy them as gifts are also classy, so it is easier to sell. Milk grapes are sometimes sold retail for only a few dozen to 100,000 VND/kg,” said Ms. Hoa, a fruit seller at Nguyen Trai market, District 5.

The price drop and the popularity of milk grapes have made many consumers worried about the quality of the product. Mr. Hoang Minh, a trader at Nguyen Van Troi market, District 3, also noticed this concern: "Chinese goods are cheap, so many people buy them, but some customers are still worried about the quality. I often advise them to choose bunches of grapes with clear origins for more peace of mind."

Although the price of milk grapes has become more accessible to all classes of consumers, not everyone is comfortable with this change. Ms. Thuy Van, 52 years old, living in District 6, shared: " I dare not buy this type of milk grapes because I am afraid that Chinese goods are not safe. If the price is too cheap, I have to be careful ."

Ms. Thanh Thao, an office worker in District 1, also expressed her concerns: "Before, I only heard about milk grapes through friends or online, but never dared to buy them because the price was too high. Now that I see milk grapes being sold at a cheaper price, I'm curious to try buying them. The taste is quite good, but I'm still wondering about their quality and origin."

The change in price and quality of milk grapes is a clear demonstration of the change in the agricultural market. From a luxury fruit, milk grapes have become a popular commodity, easily accessible to all classes. However, along with that popularity, consumers need to be knowledgeable and careful when choosing to buy, to ensure the health of themselves and their families.

In an increasingly complex market, it is important to have a clear understanding of the origin and quality of products. Consumers should choose reputable sellers and check carefully before buying, especially with products of foreign origin such as milk grapes. Only then can they enjoy the delicious taste of this fruit without worrying about food safety.
