Gradually eliminating gender stereotypes.

Việt NamViệt Nam15/12/2024

Vietnam is considered by international organizations to be one of the countries that has narrowed the gender gap fastest in the past 20 years, especially after 10 years of implementing the Gender Equality Strategy. However, gender stereotypes and the rate of women being abused or subjected to violence remain high because the patriarchal mindset is still deeply ingrained in many families, especially in ethnic minority and mountainous areas.

Gradually eliminating gender stereotypes.

The "Creative Leaders Club" of the district's ethnic boarding school regularly organizes practical activities for its members.

To gradually eliminate gender stereotypes, the Steering Committee of Project 8 "Implementing Gender Equality and Addressing Urgent Issues for Women and Children" under the National Target Program for Socio -Economic Development in Ethnic Minority and Mountainous Areas, giai đoạn 2021 - 2025, in Tan Son district has directed the implementation in 83 particularly disadvantaged villages of 17 communes in the area.

The objective of Project 8 is to raise awareness, change prejudices, improve the material and spiritual well-being, protect and care for women and children, achieve gender equality goals, and effectively address some urgent issues facing women and children in particularly disadvantaged areas. The project's beneficiaries are women and children in particularly disadvantaged communes and villages, prioritizing ethnic minority women and girls in poor and near-poor households, victims of human trafficking, domestic violence, sexual abuse, unsafe labor migration (returning from marrying foreigners), and women with disabilities.

Comrade Dinh Thi Thu Hien - Chairwoman of the Women's Union of the district, said: Recognizing the significance and importance of Project 8 for ethnic minority women and children, the Project Management Board has developed annual plans; assigned specific targets to each commune; and guided the establishment and operation of trusted addresses in the community, community communication teams, and "Clubs of Leaders of Change". At the same time, the Project 8 Management Board has strengthened guidance to women's unions at all levels in the district to proactively and flexibly organize and implement the contents and activities of Project 8 according to the plan.

Accordingly, in 2024, Tan Son district established and maintained the operation of 68 community communication groups; supported the establishment of 3 livelihood groups (tea processing in Bong 1 area, Long Coc commune; a cooperative group for brewing herbal wine in U area, Thu Cuc commune; Muong Vac natural honey, Binh hamlet, My Thuan commune, achieving OCOP 3-star product); consolidated and improved the quality of 5 community trust addresses; established, enhanced the capacity and supported the organization of activities of 18 Leaders of Change Clubs; organized 24 policy dialogues at the commune and village cluster levels; 10 gender mainstreaming training courses for village officials; 80 capacity-building communication conferences on "Changing mindsets and practices," eliminating gender stereotypes, and building a safe living environment for women and children...

Gradually eliminating gender stereotypes.

Members of the Community Communication Team participated in a competition to promote the elimination of outdated and harmful cultural customs.

Over the past three years, the activities of Project 8 have fundamentally adhered to the program's content guidelines, being both comprehensive and specific, practical, and relevant to the local situation. The project's models and activities have been well-received and supported by the people, and highly appreciated by local Party committees and authorities. They have contributed to raising awareness, changing mindsets and practices, enhancing economic empowerment, eliminating gender stereotypes and biases, and providing opportunities for women and girls to assert their roles in the family and participate in community development.

To effectively implement the contents and targets of Project 8 in 2025, the Women's Union branches at all levels in Tan Son district will continue to promote communication and advocacy activities to change "mindsets and practices," eliminate gender stereotypes and prejudices in families and communities through direct and indirect communication channels; organize communication campaigns to eliminate gender stereotypes and prejudices, and build a safe living environment for women and children.
