Vietnam women's team meets rival Myanmar again in Southeast Asian championship

According to the draw results of the Southeast Asian Football Federation (AFF) on the afternoon of May 28, the Vietnamese women's team is in Group B with rivals Myanmar, Cambodia, Laos and Timor Leste.

This is considered a fairly easy group, because at the 31st SEA Games women's football event, the Vietnamese women's team beat Cambodia 7-0 in the group stage and defeated rival Myanmar 1-0 in the semi-finals, then entered the final and beat the Thai women's team 1-0 to win the gold medal for the third consecutive time and the seventh time since 2001.

Meanwhile, in Group B, the Thai women's team faces many strong opponents including the Philippines, Indonesia, Singapore, Australia and Malaysia. At the 2022 Southeast Asian Women's Football Championship taking place in the Philippines from July 2 to 14.

In the 2019 tournament in Thailand, the Vietnamese women's team won the championship after also defeating the host Thai women's team 1-0 in extra time in the final match, with the only goal also scored by striker Huynh Nhu as at the recent 31st SEA Games. It was also the third time the Vietnamese women's team won the Southeast Asian women's football championship after 2006 and 2012.

After the 31st SEA Games, the Vietnamese women's team, currently led by coach Mai Duc Chung, will return to training on May 30 after about 10 days of rest, according to the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF).

In the training session to prepare for the Southeast Asian Championship in July, coach Mai Duc Chung called up 28 female players, most of whom had just competed successfully at the 31st SEA Games, along with many young faces.

According to the schedule announced by VFF, the Vietnamese women's team will gather from May 30 to June 26 at the Vietnam Youth Football Training Center, then from June 27 to July 2, they will train and play a friendly match (expected on July 1) in France. From July 2 to July 14, coach Mai Duc Chung and his team will go to the Philippines to compete in the Southeast Asian Championship to defend their championship title.
