International USD exchange rate weakens as expectations of Fed rate cut increase
The Dollar Index (DXY), a measure of the strength of the USD against a basket of six major currencies, opened the morning session on December 5 at 99.06 points. This index has decreased sharply by 0.19 points compared to the previous session. By 8:20 a.m., the USD continued to decrease slightly, down to 99.00 points.
The market is pricing in a 25 basis point rate cut by the Fed. Analysts expect economic data to support at least two rate cuts early next year, making it unlikely the dollar will recover even in the first quarter.
The greenback also came under further pressure as President Donald Trump announced plans to name a successor to Fed Chairman Jerome Powell early next year. Kevin Hassett’s status as a potential candidate could cause concern among investors, who fear he will push for more aggressive interest rate cuts as Trump has sought.
