Artificial intelligence (AI) applications in the healthcare industry: Opportunities, challenges and future trends

In the era of Industry 4.0, artificial intelligence (AI) is gradually changing the face of the healthcare industry, from supporting disease diagnosis, managing medical records to personalizing treatment and predicting the risk of disease outbreaks. AI not only helps improve the quality of healthcare but also creates many opportunities for people to access better, faster and more accurate healthcare services.

AI is being widely applied in major hospitals.

In Vietnam, AI is widely applied in major hospitals to support medical image analysis, helping doctors identify early signs of diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, and lung disease. AI also supports medical record management, automates the process of storing and retrieving information, minimizes errors in data processing, and improves work efficiency.

Artificial intelligence (AI) applications in healthcare: Opportunities, challenges, and future trends.

Professor Dr. Thach Ngoc Nguyen, Vice Rector and Head of the Faculty of Medicine, Tan Tao University.

Professor Thach Ngoc Nguyen, Vice Rector and Head of the Faculty of Medicine at Tan Tao University, said: “Currently, AI enhances the accuracy of diagnosis, the most typical example being in X-ray, CT, or EIA, where the accuracy of AI-generated diagnoses can be equal to or even surpass that of doctors. In addition, AI optimizes the treatment process and personalizes medicine. AI helps to analyze the quality of large amounts of data from patient records and tests to develop treatment strategies for each patient, which improves treatment effectiveness and minimizes side effects.”

Furthermore, AI also helps with clinical decision-making and reduces the workload for doctors. In this regard, AI can suggest differential diagnoses, providing doctors with a stronger basis for making quicker and more accurate decisions, and warn of drug interactions or risks for patients. This is one of the most important aspects of healthcare.

Transforming the vision of AI in healthcare through its application in training.

In the future, the healthcare industry aims to build a comprehensive healthcare system where AI not only assists but also optimizes the entire medical examination and treatment process. AI will help minimize diagnosis and treatment time, thereby reducing costs and enabling patients to access medical services quickly and accurately.

Students, please research and collaborate with AI, and together with AI, create more new knowledge.

AI will also play a crucial role in personalizing healthcare services, providing tailored treatments based on each individual's unique characteristics. As a result, patients will experience comprehensive healthcare with safe and effective treatment regimens.

According to Professor Dr. Thach Ngoc Nguyen, AI currently helps students research and enhance their knowledge, find documents, update and study new information, and provides them with a better overall perspective and approach to new issues. Importantly, AI can help simulate clinical situations. Case studies help students practice diagnosis and treatment methods. Furthermore, AI can personalize learning by creating tests tailored to students' levels and abilities. With the AI-assisted theory combined with clinical experience from their professors, medical students' skills will develop very rapidly.”

Artificial intelligence (AI) applications in healthcare: Opportunities, challenges, and future trends.

Professor and Doctor Thach Ngoc Nguyen believes in the bright future of AI-powered commercial products manufactured in Vietnam.

Despite the challenges, AI opens up many opportunities in healthcare, improving the quality of medical care and assisting doctors in discovering new treatments, increasing their ability to respond to complex diseases.

Professor Thach Ngoc Nguyen stated: "Learning with AI is very important. Because we must learn in this way to keep up with the progress of the world . If we only learn the basics, it won't match our learning ability and potential. Therefore, with the trend of AI, students should work alongside AI and create more new knowledge together."

According to Professor Thach Ngoc Nguyen, at the present time, the young generation of Vietnam should not only be excellent consumers, buying the latest information technology or AI products in the world, but they should also be pioneers in producing AI programs and algorithms, competing to establish new startups in this AI revolution. This competition is fierce, but the chances of success are very high because Vietnam has sufficient human resources, capabilities, and willpower.

“Currently, our research team is working with PhD candidates in information technology from the University of Science, Ho Chi Minh City to write a new AI program to study blood flow in coronary arteries. Our goal is to conduct cardiovascular research and commercialize our products, including the AI program. I believe in the bright future of commercially available AI products manufactured in Vietnam and widely used in the US and global markets,” added Professor Dr. Thach Ngoc Nguyen.
