Highlights Hanoi FC and Pohang Steelers - Clip: FPT Play
Hanoi FC spared no expense in recruiting foreign players, building a strong squad, aiming to pass the group stage of the 2023-2024 AFC Champions League. Playing at My Dinh National Stadium and having a good rhythm of the match, the capital team showed less experience than their opponents from Korea.
Van Quyet and his teammates could not score against their opponents from Korea.
Using all 6 foreign players in the starting lineup, but the short training and familiarization time made it difficult for the new players to integrate into the team's playing style. The stumbling operation of Hanoi FC's tactics created opportunities for Pohang Steelers' strikers to take advantage, penetrate deep and score.
Within just 9 minutes, from the 30th minute of the match, Pohang Steelers scored 3 goals against the Vietnamese team. Being behind by such a large margin, the Hanoi FC players lost their fighting spirit and had to concede another goal at the beginning of the second half.
Pohang Steelers quickly decided the match in the first half
Newcomer Joel Tagueu's double brings honorary goals to Hanoi FC
With the advantage of leading the scoreboard, combined with extensive experience in the AFC Champions League, the away team Pohang Steelers proactively slowed down the pace of the match, gave control of the ball to the opponent, limited collisions and disputes, and retreated to defend in order to preserve their strength.
Thanks to that, coach Bandovic's team had the opportunity to advance, deploy an attacking formation and score two goals thanks to a double from Cameroonian rookie Joel Tagueu near the end of the second half, setting the final score at 2-4.
After the match, captain Nguyen Van Quyet commented: "The match result did not reflect the true situation of the match as well as the performance of Hanoi FC. We fell behind due to an unlucky own goal and lost concentration, allowing the opponent to score 3 more goals in a short time. We performed no worse than Pohang Steelers but still lack experience in this playground."
Hanoi FC failed to achieve its goal in the opening match of AFC Champions League 2023-2024
The midfielder of Hanoi FC also frankly assessed the professional level and quality of the Vietnamese players as not inferior to foreign players as well as their Korean counterparts. Van Quyet affirmed that he and the whole team will improve their performance to achieve positive results in the next rounds.
"Vietnamese players are capable of playing for K-League or J-League. They just need more confidence and courage to be no less than anyone. We have proven that Vietnamese players play well and even somewhat dominate foreign players. If the foreign players have more time to practice and get acquainted with the team, perhaps Hanoi FC will not lose to Pohang Steelers" - Van Quyet added.
Coach Bandovic's team failed to achieve their goal in the opening match of the AFC Champions League and temporarily ranked bottom of Group J after the first round. Meanwhile, Pohang Steelers temporarily took the lead thanks to their first win. After a 2-2 draw, Urawa Reds Diamonds and Wuhan Three Towns had 1 point each, temporarily sharing 2nd and 3rd place in Group J.
