Overview of the Beltway 2 project, Vo Nguyen Giap - Pham Van Dong section

Ho Chi Minh City is completing the final procedures to start construction of the second section of Ring Road 2, connecting Vo Nguyen Giap Street to Pham Van Dong Street. The project has a total length of about 2.5 km, with a total estimated investment of VND4,543 billion from the city budget.

According to the plan of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport, the project is expected to start construction at the end of November after completing the approval of the construction drawing design and organizing the bidding to select the construction contractor.

Design of key intersections

To address traffic congestion and enhance connectivity, the project will build two large-scale, modern interchanges.

Binh Thai Interchange

At the intersection with Vo Nguyen Giap Street, Binh Thai Interchange will be built in a complete asterisk shape. This item includes a steel bridge along the Ring Road 2 crossing Vo Nguyen Giap Street, combined with a tunnel system on parallel roads to ensure continuous traffic flow. This intersection belongs to phase 1 of the Ring Road 2 project and is expected to start construction at the end of December 2025.

The area planned to build Binh Thai traffic intersection is also the starting point of section 2 of Ring Road 2.

3-level intersection with Pham Van Dong Street

The technical highlight of Section 2 is the three-level interchange between Ring Road 2 and Pham Van Dong Street. This complex design includes many overpasses and turns:

  • Overpass No. 1: Located on Ring Road 2, crossing Linh Dong, Pham Van Dong, Kha Van Can and Rach Ngang streets. Each bridge branch has 3-5 lanes, 12.5 m to 19.5 m wide.
  • Overpass No. 2: Is the right turn from Ring Road 2 to Pham Van Dong Street (towards Tan Son Nhat Airport), including 2 lanes, 9 m wide.
  • Overpass No. 3: Located on Pham Van Dong Street, 16 m wide with 4 lanes, then splits into two branches: one branch goes straight to Linh Xuan intersection and one branch turns left towards National Highway 1 - Go Dua.
  • Central roundabout: 30 m in diameter to regulate traffic.

Progress and site clearance work

In November, Ho Chi Minh City will prioritize completing land acquisition along the entire route to create a clean land fund for construction. Key areas include the route from Phu Huu Bridge to Road 79 (section 1) and the route from Binh Thai intersection to Pham Van Dong Street (section 2).

For cases where the site has not been handed over, the Compensation and Site Clearance Board will coordinate with relevant units to mobilize and at the same time enforce land recovery according to regulations to ensure the overall progress of the project.

Background of the entire Ring Road 2 route

The Ring Road 2 project is divided into several sections. In addition to the upcoming section 2, section 1 (from Phu Huu Bridge to Vo Nguyen Giap Street) is about 3.6 km long and has a total investment of more than VND9,800 billion. Meanwhile, section 3 is implemented under the BT (Build - Transfer) contract form and is currently waiting for completion of legal procedures to be able to start construction again. Closing the entire Ring Road 2 route is an important goal to reduce traffic pressure for the inner city area and promote socio- economic development.

The entire Ring Road 2, once closed, will become the main traffic artery of Ho Chi Minh City.
