Fund management companies in Vietnam have grown strongly in recent times along with the stock market.

On the morning of October 17, the conference “Fund industry in the process of developing the stock market and attracting indirect investment capital into Vietnam” was held by the State Securities Commission in Ho Chi Minh City, chaired by Minister of Finance Nguyen Van Thang. The event was attended by many departments, representatives of the World Bank, International Financial Organizations, fund management companies, securities companies, domestic and foreign commercial banks in Vietnam...

Speaking at the conference, the Minister of Finance shared a panoramic picture of the macro economy with many bright spots. In recent times, the Vietnamese stock market has made remarkable contributions to economic growth, gradually becoming an important medium- and long-term capital mobilization channel. In the first 9 months of 2025, the total capital mobilized in the stock market reached about 394,300 billion VND. The stock market has been active with the stock market capitalization reaching 78.5% of GDP; outstanding debt in the bond market reaching 22.3% of GDP. Since the beginning of the year, the average transaction value in the stock market has increased by nearly 39% compared to the average of the previous year; in the bond market, it has increased by 27.7%. The number of investor accounts as of the end of September reached more than 11 million accounts, an increase of 19% compared to the end of 2024, of which more than 18,800 accounts of domestic institutional investors and nearly 48,000 accounts of foreign investors. In the development process of the stock market, securities investment fund management activities in Vietnam have achieved certain results, gradually contributing to the sustainable development of the stock market.

To date, the market has 43 fund management companies managing assets worth more than VND800,000 billion, more than 7 times higher than in 2014, with an average growth rate of about 20%/year. However, compared to countries in the region such as Thailand, Malaysia... the ratio of managed assets value to GDP of Vietnam is still modest, accounting for more than 6% of GDP, so there is still a lot of room for development.

On October 8, the FTSE Russell rating agency officially announced the upgrade of Vietnam's stock market from a frontier market to a secondary emerging market. This upgrade has contributed to raising Vietnam's position on the world map. The upgraded market will open up opportunities to attract foreign indirect investment flows, supplementing resources for economic development. This is also an opportunity to change the quality of the stock market, including changes in the structure of the investor base, increasing the proportion of institutional investors, promoting the development of the investment fund industry to become more professional, growing and sustainable.

The Minister also requested fund management companies and market members to proactively and actively participate in building policies and contributing ideas to legal documents to develop a transparent and modern fund industry and stock market according to international standards; continue to improve their capacity to promote their role as professional asset managers; build and develop common standards of professional ethics in the industry, build investor confidence when investing through funds...
