This is a key event to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the founding of WMO, focusing on the “Early Warnings for All” (EW4All) initiative and other strategic issues, including the Global Greenhouse Gas Monitoring System (G3W) and the application of artificial intelligence (AI) in meteorological forecasting.

According to the announcement, in addition to the EW4All initiative and the G3W system, this year's agenda also includes discussions on the Integrated Forecasting System (WIPPS), legal and governance issues. In addition, WMO is also planning to review the WMO Youth Action Plan and propose a supplementary budget for the 2026–2027 financial year.

Ambassador Mai Phan Dung, Head of the Permanent Mission of Vietnam in Geneva attended the event.

Sharing with VNA reporters, Ambassador Mai Phan Dung - Head of the Permanent Mission of Vietnam in Geneva - said that Vietnam highly appreciates the WMO and the United Nations (UN) for their efforts in turning early warning into a global public good, saving lives and protecting development. Ambassador Mai Phan Dung emphasized: "The climate crisis, marked by increasingly frequent and devastating extreme weather events, poses one of the greatest challenges of our time, threatening decades of development achievements and requiring collective, science- based action". According to the Ambassador, the WMO plays an indispensable role as the world's leading organization in meteorology, hydrology and climate science - helping countries build resilience and save lives. For Vietnam, the impacts of climate change are not far-fetched but a daily reality. As a tropical monsoon country with a long coastline, Vietnam is among the countries most vulnerable to climate change. This year alone, severe storms have caused tragic loss of life and livelihoods.

The Ambassador stressed that these experiences strengthen Viet Nam’s resolve to take action and cooperate more closely with WMO and its partners. Viet Nam fully supports the Early Warning for All initiative, viewing it not simply as a project, but as a strategic imperative – one that can significantly reduce human suffering and economic losses. Closing the early warning gap by 2027 is both a moral obligation and an economic necessity. Viet Nam is ready to accelerate the implementation of the EW4All roadmap nationwide, in close coordination with WMO and the UN system. Viet Nam calls on all partners – governments, development agencies and the private sector – to join hands in mobilizing the resources and political will needed to ensure that everyone on Earth is protected.

This year’s event is symbolic as it coincides with the 75th anniversary of WMO. Over the past 75 years, WMO has played a key role in international cooperation in meteorology, climate and hydrology. The celebrations, which will include a reception and a drone demonstration, will celebrate the contributions of the global meteorological science community and reaffirm WMO’s commitment to protecting society against climate change. With the wide participation of countries and organizations, this year’s event is expected to have a lasting impact on the direction of the global meteorological system and climate response.
