Over the past 5 years, many households in My Phuoc commune (My Tu district, Soc Trang province) have been doing well with the model of raising wild ducks.
This is a purebred waterfowl in nature, so taking care of it is very easy, especially bringing quite high economic value.

As easy as raising wild ducks
Visit the duck farm of Ms. Nguyen Thi Nguyen in My Phuoc commune (My Tu district, Soc Trang province), one of the households that has succeeded with this model.
Ms. Nguyen said: After researching, she found that raising wild ducks is economically effective and suitable for local natural conditions, so in 2015 her family bought a few dozen ducks to try raising them.
After a few batches, seeing the low loss rate and good growth and development, she expanded the model of combining meat ducks and breeding ducks. Up to now, her total flock of wild ducks has reached nearly 1,000.
“Because they are raised in the natural environment, duck meat is very firm, chewy, and delicious. Because of these characteristics, it is favored by the market.
The price of meat ducks is always high, from 70,000 - 85,000 VND/duck, sometimes up to 100,000 VND/duck but still not enough to sell. Currently, my family sells about a few hundred meat ducks and over 2,000 ducklings each month. After deducting expenses, the profit is from 15 - 17 million VND", Ms. Nguyen added.

According to the households raising wild ducks here, this type of poultry is easy to raise, grows quickly, and can adapt to water environments contaminated with alum. The main food is rice, water hyacinth, bran, banana trees, and snails, so the cost to implement the model is quite low.

Mr. Le Vu Phuong - a duck farmer in My Phuoc commune, My Tu district (Soc Trang province) - shared: "Raising this duck is quite easy because it has good disease resistance compared to normal ducks.
However, it is still necessary to vaccinate against avian influenza such as H5N1. Ducks raised for more than 2 months reach a weight of about 800 grams and can be sold. They start reproducing after 8 months. The good thing about wild ducks is that they lay eggs continuously for 9 months. Each litter contains 10-15 eggs, so the source of ducklings is always abundant.

Realizing the practical effectiveness of raising wild ducks, many households in My Phuoc have begun to replicate the model. Currently, there are several dozen households raising wild ducks with a total flock of several thousand ducks.
On that basis, in 2020, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of My Tu district coordinated with My Phuoc commune to establish Truong Giang Livestock Cooperative with 28 participating members. The Cooperative is the focal point for transferring livestock breeding techniques, providing breeding animals, and guaranteeing output for members.
After 3 years of operation, the wild duck model is known by many people and has better consumption, especially orders are increasing continuously.

“To meet market demand, the cooperative has also installed 4 incubators with a capacity of 6,400 eggs, 1 plucking machine and 1 vacuum machine to preserve duck meat for markets outside the locality.
On average, each month the cooperative supplies 2,000 - 2,200 meat ducks and 3,500 - 4,000 breeding ducks, earning billions of dong in profit each year," said Mr. Le Van Trung, Director of Truong Giang Livestock Cooperative.

As a member of Truong Giang Livestock Cooperative, Mr. Le Vu Phuong said: "Thanks to the establishment of the Cooperative, the market for wild duck consumption is better.
Both breeding and meat ducks are supported with consumption, so everyone can feel secure in production. Moreover, members are all connected and support each other in bringing products to consumers.
