Nguyen Dinh Chieu, born in 1822, commonly known as Do Chieu, with the pen name Manh Trach and the pseudonym Trong Phu, was born in Gia Dinh. He early on displayed the talent and spirit of a patriotic intellectual. Despite being blind, he persevered in his studies, writing, and social activities. He fought with his pen, immersing himself in the people's struggle and becoming a spokesperson for the patriotic movement against the French. He was the first Vietnamese poet to speak of people's war, highlighting the role of peasant patriots in the uprisings against French colonialism.

Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee and Chairman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of the province, Nguyen Thanh Hai, offered incense at Ton Thanh Ancestral Temple.

From 1859 to 1861, Nguyen Dinh Chieu resided at Ton Thanh Pagoda, Thanh Ba village, My Loc commune, Can Giuoc district, Long An province (now Thanh Ba hamlet, My Loc commune, Tay Ninh province). There, he opened a school, practiced medicine for the people, composed many patriotic poems to encourage resistance, and participated in leading the resistance army against the French colonialists.

Following the attack on the Tay Duong outpost at Truong Binh market on the night of the full moon in November of the year Tan Dau (1861), where 15 peasant patriots bravely sacrificed their lives, with his pen and loyal spirit, he wrote the "Eulogy for the Martyrs of Can Giuoc" to commemorate the martyrs at the request of the Governor of Gia Dinh, Do Quang. This eulogy has become a unique literary work, an epic of the Southern Vietnamese peasants, highly inspiring the patriotic spirit and resistance against foreign invaders of our people in the context of colonial invasion at that time.

Ton Thanh Ancestral Temple is where Nguyen Dinh Chieu taught, composed poetry, and practiced medicine to treat the people.

In 1862, he settled in Ba Tri, Ben Tre, where he continued to run a school, practice medicine, and write patriotic poetry and prose. The French colonialists tried every means to entice and bribe him, but he resolutely refused, remaining steadfastly loyal to the people until his last breath.

He passed away on May 24th, 1888 (July 3rd, 1888 in Ba Tri), leaving behind many famous literary works such as: Luc Van Tien, Duong Tu - Ha Mau, Ngu Tieu Y Thuat Van Dap…

In recognition and honor of his contributions to literature, teaching, and medicine, on March 21, 2021, UNESCO recognized Nguyen Dinh Chieu as a World Cultural Figure.
