Phong Hoa Commune: Focusing on efficient production for the 2025-2026 winter-spring crop.

Recognizing the winter-spring crop as the main and most important production season of the year, now that the floodwaters have receded, farmers in Phong Hoa commune, Dong Thap province, are urgently cleaning their fields and taking advantage of the opportunity to plant the 2025-2026 winter-spring agricultural crop according to the recommended schedule.

In Phong Hoa commune, the total area for planting rice in the 2025-2026 winter-spring crop is approximately 1,710 hectares. The main rice varieties used include: OM 380, OM 18, IR 50404, and Dai Thom 8.

Mr. Nguyen Van Nia focuses on taking care of vegetables and crops during the winter-spring season.

The area planted with fruit trees remains stable and continues to develop at 3,094 hectares, with popular fruit varieties including: tangerines, mangoes, durians, jackfruits, longans, and plums. Regarding vegetables, the commune has 696 hectares, focusing on crops such as chili peppers, cucumbers, gourds, pumpkins, bitter melons, and corn.

During September and October, heavy rains combined with high tides significantly impacted the lives and production of people in Phong Hoa commune. Many farmers had to harvest early and sell at low prices.

Compared to rice and other crops, damage to orchards is more severe and difficult to remedy. This year, the weather has been erratic, and most of the damage to rice and fruit trees is due to farmers not following the recommendations of the agricultural sector. Many orchards were planted spontaneously, without proper planning, and lacked robust dike systems, leading to significant losses.

In response to this situation, the authorities and people of Phong Hoa commune, along with specialized units, focused on implementing measures to care for crops and restore production. They proactively reviewed and reinforced dikes and embankments, repaired landslides along canals and ditches, and pumped out water from orchards.

In addition, proactively disseminate information and encourage farmers to implement appropriate technical measures to protect production, combined with regularly updating information on weather developments, floods, and tidal surges, promptly reporting damage and proposing support plans for farmers, helping people raise awareness and proactively respond...

Mr. Le Van Minh, residing in Phong Hoa commune, shared: “Taking advantage of the receding water, I and other farmers here are urgently going to the fields to clean up the land, thoroughly preparing the soil to plow under the straw and rice stubble in order to plant according to the recommended concentrated planting schedule. We hope that in the coming time, the price of rice will remain high so that we farmers can produce a little more profit.”

Besides prioritizing the selection of certified seeds suitable for the local soil, I was also able to adjust and reduce the amount of seeds sown accordingly…”.

Mr. Nguyen Van Nia, residing in Phong Hoa commune, said: “This winter-spring season, my family cultivated 2,000 square meters of cucumbers and vegetables. Currently, our crops are developing well. Taking advantage of the sunny weather, I am focusing on weeding, hilling, and applying nitrogen fertilizer. This year, I mainly used high-yield, high-quality cucumber and vegetable varieties to sell at a better price at the end of the season.”

Farmers in Phong Hoa commune are focusing on cleaning their fields in preparation for planting the winter-spring rice crop.

Comrade Tran Ba Hau, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Phong Hoa commune, said: "In order to contribute to enhancing the value of agricultural production for farmers, the commune is focusing on directing and guiding the restoration of production after rain, floods, and high tides, helping to minimize damage to people, stabilize local agricultural production, and ensure the progress of planting the 2025-2026 winter-spring crop."

This includes focusing on solutions such as: building sustainable agricultural value chains with close links between production and consumption (cooperatives, businesses, supermarkets), developing OCOP products, supporting trade promotion; strengthening agricultural extension activities, providing technical advice on advanced, safe, and sustainable farming methods for farmers towards organic and ecological agriculture.

"At the same time, the locality encourages businesses to invest in deep processing (drying, packaging, etc.) and build brands and trademarks (OCOP) to increase the value of products."

"Combining the strengthening and effective operation of cooperative groups and cooperatives, acting as the 'nucleus' connecting production and consumption," Comrade Tran Ba Hau, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Phong Hoa commune, further shared.
