Kim Son mangrove honey is primarily harvested from bee colonies raised in the coastal mangrove forests of Kim Son. This area boasts unique climatic, soil, and ecological conditions: mangrove trees thrive in the transitional zone between water and land, influenced by tides, high salinity, and continuous alluvial deposits. These natural factors create mangrove forests rich in honey, pure and with a distinctive aroma unlike any other flower.
When freshly harvested, mangrove honey has a light yellow, shimmering color, gradually changing to a characteristic amber hue over time. The honey has a delicate aroma with a hint of saltiness – a hallmark of the coastal ecosystem. The sweetness is not harsh but gentle, with a long-lasting, fragrant aftertaste. Because it is harvested from natural mangrove forests that are minimally affected by fertilizers or pesticides, the product retains high purity and is rich in minerals and vitamins. Beyond its culinary value, Kim Son mangrove honey is also highly valued by consumers for its nutritional value and health benefits. The product has become a familiar choice in many households and has great potential for development into a valuable export commodity.
Despite possessing many outstanding advantages, Kim Son mangrove honey previously faced difficulties in establishing its position in the market. The lack of a common brand, an official identification system, and a centralized quality control mechanism made it difficult to build absolute trust with consumers. The prevalence of products of unknown origin, counterfeit goods, and imitations created numerous obstacles for local beekeepers in production and consumption. Furthermore, limited promotion failed to fully exploit the potential value of the Kim Son mangrove forest resources. Therefore, the need to establish a legally protected brand to affirm the unique quality of the product was essential.
In response to this situation, in 2023, the Ninh Binh Provincial People's Committee approved the project "Establishing, managing, and developing the Kim Son - Ninh Binh mangrove honey certification mark for mangrove honey products of Kim Son district, Ninh Binh province." The project was led by the Center for Technology Research and Intellectual Property (CIPTEK). The process of building the certification mark was implemented systematically, including surveying the raw material area, assessing the current state of beekeeping, researching honey composition, developing management regulations, production - harvesting - preservation - packaging processes, as well as designing the brand identity and intellectual property registration dossier.
To date, the trademark "Kim Son - Ninh Binh Mangrove Honey" has been granted trademark registration certificate No. 585601 under Decision No. 274541/QD- SHTT.IP dated December 9, 2025, by the Intellectual Property Office, with the owner of the trademark being the People's Committee of Kim Dong Commune. In addition, the Intellectual Property Office has also granted industrial design patents for the product label (certificate number 43091) and the packaging (certificate number 43090). These are important steps to clearly identify and create a unified brand image for this distinctive local honey product.
Registering and obtaining a certification mark for Kim Son mangrove honey brings many practical benefits to producers, consumers, and local authorities. First, the certification mark helps affirm the reputation, clear origin, and distinctive quality of mangrove honey. Thanks to this official identification mark, consumers can easily distinguish genuine products from counterfeit honey, thus confidently choosing and using them.
With product protection, the commercial value of Kim Son mangrove honey is enhanced, creating favorable conditions for expanding the market not only within Ninh Binh province but also to many other provinces and cities, and even to the international market. This contributes to increasing income for beekeepers and promotes the stable and sustainable development of beekeeping.
Furthermore, certification marks play a crucial role in raising awareness of product quality management and control. Producers must adhere to technical procedures, ensure food safety and hygiene, and maintain consistent quality. This promotes linkages among beekeeping households, forming a more professional production, processing, and consumption chain. Simultaneously, certification marks are an effective promotional tool, contributing to spreading the image of Kim Son Ninh Binh's specialties to a wider range of domestic and international consumers, thereby creating momentum for socio-economic development in the locality.
