America has a new class of teenage investors.
Mizu Pope, 13, from Massachusetts, is not yet old enough to vote or drive. But she is already trading stocks every week - through a custodial account managed by her mother. Mizu Pope said she wants to buy stocks in companies whose products she is familiar with, like Netflix and McDonald's.
This reflects a new trend emerging in the US: Today's young generation is accessing stocks and other types of financial investments early, not just to "try it out", but also to prepare for important financial goals such as buying a house, accumulating a retirement fund or financial freedom.
What is remarkable is that this shift is not random. It reflects a new phase in the US economy , where "investor culture" is spreading from adults to teenagers - a class of potential investors nurtured from the age of 13, 14.
At 14, Sophia Castiblanco of Chicago has also started earning money as a social media content creator. Three years ago, her parents encouraged her to invest some of her income instead of putting all her money in cash. She now invests thousands of dollars in accounts set up by her father at Charles Schwab, Edward Jones and Robinhood. She often posts videos on social media with investment advice.
Sophia Castiblanco - Stock investor says: "Stock investing is definitely an important part of my success. First of all, there is no minimum age to start investing. You can open a custodial account at any age, allowing you to invest under your parents' name. I have always had an entrepreneurial mindset and am willing to take risks."
In the US, investment platforms for children, like Greenlight, are seeing a staggering increase, with the number of trades made by minors up 77% compared to two years ago.
The reason is the influence of parents - a generation that regrets starting late and does not want their children to be left behind. In addition, in the US, personal finance has become a popular subject, and by 2031, 30 states are expected to apply it as a mandatory curriculum. Another reason comes from the generation of teenagers, who want to achieve financial freedom and retire early.
