On the afternoon of December 3, the surface of Nguyen Cong Tru Street (near Ngo Quyen intersection, An Hai ward) suddenly collapsed, creating a deep hole right in the center of Da Nang city. The incident caused panic among many passersby and caused two cars parked on the side of the road to fall into the hole.
Mr. Hoang Cong Thanh, Chairman of the People's Committee of An Hai Ward, said that the police and urban regulations forces quickly arrived and blocked off the scene. "There have been no recorded casualties so far, only two cars have collapsed. The authorities have lifted the cars and are continuing to investigate," Mr. Thanh said.
Initial information said that at around 2pm the same day, the authorities received a report that the road surface suddenly collapsed, creating a deep hole. One of the two cars involved in the accident was stuck right at the edge of the hole.
According to records, the sinkhole is more than 10m long, nearly half the width of the road, and about 2m deep. The sinkhole is located close to the fence of the Capital Square project under construction. Part of the project's fence also tilted towards the mouth of the hole.
By 4 p.m. the same day, authorities had lifted two cars out of the hole and barricaded the entire area to ensure safety, while continuing to investigate the cause of the collapse.
