Emotional 'commitment' to ask parents to let goalkeeper of Vietnam women's team practice soccer

“ Dear grandparents, parents, I am Dao Thi Kieu Oanh, I wish to go to Ha Dong to learn soccer. I have asked my grandparents and parents for their opinions and have been allowed to study there. I will try studying for 1 year, if I feel that my academic performance is declining, my parents will transfer me back.

I promise that when I go out there, I will study hard and not go out. After sports, I will focus on studying culture. At the end of the year, I will be an excellent student or an advanced student. If I cannot do that, I will come back, ” Dao Thi Kieu Oanh wrote in her application to her family.

The aforementioned commitment letter was written on July 17, 2015, coinciding with the time when Hanoi Women's Club was recruiting new players. The person who wrote the commitment letter was goalkeeper Dao Thi Kieu Oanh - a member of the Vietnamese women's national team that participated in the 2023 Women's World Cup.

Even Kieu Oanh's close teammates like Thanh Nha, Van Su, Hai Linh and Vu Thi Hoa know about this "commitment". Thanh Nha said: " This is a real commitment that Kieu Oanh wrote when she was young. We need great determination and effort to play football, as well as the support of our families ."

Kieu Oanh was born in 2003, she expressed her strong love for football. Her determination to become a professional football player was so great that Kieu Oanh mustered up the courage to write a commitment that she would "not neglect her studies" to convince her family to agree.

Kieu Oanh is a talented goalkeeper of the Vietnamese women's team.

The trust that her grandparents and parents had in Dao Thi Kieu Oanh was well rewarded. In just 8 years, from a shy schoolgirl in the countryside, Kieu Oanh became an important player for the Hanoi I Women's Club. At the youth level, she was continuously the best goalkeeper in the National U16 and U19 Women's Tournaments.

Kieu Oanh is only the third choice in goal for the Vietnamese women's team. But for a goalkeeper who has just turned 20, this is still a valuable experience that many previous generations of seniors cannot have. Kieu Oanh is expected to be a pillar of the Vietnamese women's team in the future and her family can be proud of the decision to let their little daughter practice football 8 years ago.
