Avianca Airlines, Colombia's national airline, is the world's most punctual airline, with its on-time takeoff rate reaching 85.73% in 2023.

Cirium, a 100-year-old UK-based aviation data provider, announced in early January the top five most punctual global airlines in the world in 2023. The selection criteria are based on the airline's on-time performance and network, which must have flights to at least three regions (continents) around the world every day.

Avianca Airlines, the national airline of Colombia, took the top spot this year with an on-time performance of 85.73%. In 2022, Avianca will be ranked 6th. The remaining four names are: Azul Airlines, Qatar Airways, Delta Air Lines, Iberia. This annual award will be announced each year to honor the contributions and efforts of customer service as well as affirm the prestige of airlines around the world.

Cirium defines “on-time” as being at the gate within 14 minutes and 59 seconds of the scheduled time and departing within 15 minutes of the original scheduled departure time. Several other airlines have higher on-time ratings than the five listed, but do not meet the requirement of having flights to at least three regions.

Cirium also presented its “Platinum Award” to the global airline that was judged to have “performed best in the year.” This year, the win went to Delta Air Lines, an American airline, for not only being on time but also “bringing more benefits to passengers and airports.” South Africa’s Safair was the most punctual low-cost airline, with an on-time performance of over 90%.
