The 2023 Asian Cup will take place from January 12, 2024, in Doha (Qatar). This is the 18th time Asia's number 1 tournament for national teams has been held.

Nine teams have won the Asian Cup, with Japan winning the most with four times. Following them are Iran, Saudi Arabia (three times), South Korea (twice), Israel, Kuwait, Australia, Iraq, and Qatar (once). The host team, Qatar, is the current champion of the tournament.

24 teams are divided into 6 groups. The teams play a round robin to score points. The two teams with the most points in each group and the 4 teams with the best records will advance.

In the ranking of third-placed teams, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) ranks them based on points, goal difference, goals scored, fair-play points and draw.

Vietnam is in Group D with Japan, Iraq and Indonesia. The goal of coach Philippe Troussier and his team is to get past the group stage. In the previous two times participating, Vietnam reached the quarter-finals.

At the 2019 Asian Cup, the Vietnamese team under the leadership of coach Park Hang Seo passed the group stage thanks to being one of the four best third-placed teams.
