According to information from the Central Council for Health Protection of Cadres, as reported by the Vietnam News Agency (TTXVN) on the afternoon of July 19, after a period of illness, despite the dedicated efforts of the Party, the State, and a team of professors and doctors, and the devoted care of his family, General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong passed away at 1:38 PM on July 19 at the Central Military Hospital 108 due to his advanced age and severe illness.

China's Xinhua news agency published on its homepage: "General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam Nguyen Phu Trong passed away on July 19, at the age of 80."
CGTN reviews some milestones in the career of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, including leading the Communist Party of Vietnam from 2011 and serving as President of Vietnam from 2018 to 2020.
In 2022, General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong received the Friendship Order of China. This is China's highest honor bestowed upon foreigners.
Writing about the achievements of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, the American newspaper Washington Post commented: "On the international stage, Nguyen Phu Trong is considered to be the skillful implementer of Vietnam's 'bamboo diplomacy' as the country navigates its relations with key economic partners while building relationships with nations such as India and Russia."
The Washington Post added: “His anti-corruption efforts aim to restore public confidence in the Communist Party and its management of Vietnam’s economy, one of the most dynamic in the region, with a thriving startup sector.”
The New York Times also praised the achievements of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong.
“Mr. Nguyen Phu Trong has led one of Asia’s fastest-growing economies and enhanced Vietnam’s prestige on the international stage. During his tenure, major world powers have actively sought to build relationships with this Southeast Asian nation,” the New York Times wrote.
The New York Times suggests that, with his "bamboo diplomacy" strategy, General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong has been "very skilled at balancing Vietnam's relationship with major powers."
"He is a master of risk prevention," said Alexander Vuving, a professor at the Daniel K. Inouye Center for Asia-Pacific Security Studies.
Regarding the anti-corruption campaign launched by General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, the French news agency AFP quoted experts as saying that the campaign has contributed to boosting the economy, which is evident in Vietnam's economic growth rate in recent years. Vietnam's GDP is projected to grow by approximately 5% in 2023.
"Vietnam has also become an important part of the supply chains of some of the world's most important businesses over the past decade," AFP noted.
Furthermore, in terms of foreign relations, according to AFP, during the term of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, Vietnam strengthened relations with various countries, including several major powers.
