Serious eye injuries, risk of blindness from homemade fireworks.

Although Tet (Lunar New Year) hasn't arrived yet, many teenagers have been making their own firecrackers, leading to serious accidents, requiring emergency hospitalization and risking vision loss.

According to information from the National Eye Hospital, the hospital recently admitted two male patients with severe eye injuries caused by homemade firecrackers.

The first case involved a 16-year-old patient with CVP (residing in Lang Son province ) who was admitted with a ruptured left eyeball, prolapse, and loss of intraocular tissue, resulting in complete vision loss.

According to family members, the patient was making firecrackers (paper-rolled mortar firecrackers) when they unexpectedly exploded, causing the accident. Doctors said the firecracker explosion ruptured the patient's eyeball. Although the patient underwent emergency surgery that night, their condition is now stable, but the risk of permanent vision loss remains very high.

That same night, the Central Eye Hospital received another patient, NBM (22 years old, from Nghe An), with a large penetrating wound in his left eye, a complex tear in the sclera, and prolapse of intraocular tissue. The patient stated that while making firecrackers by putting explosives into plastic tubes, the firecrackers unexpectedly exploded, causing the plastic tubes to shatter. The broken plastic fragments flew into his eye and face, causing serious injuries.

Previously, Viet Duc Friendship Hospital had repeatedly warned about the situation of teenagers being injured due to the manufacture and use of homemade firecrackers. In some cases, patients had their hands crushed, and doctors were unable to save their fingers.

Doctors advise people against illegally manufacturing or using firecrackers, especially homemade ones. This is not only a violation of the law but also poses a risk of serious injury, even life-threatening.

To protect their own safety and that of the community, people need to raise their awareness, absolutely refrain from buying, selling, or using illegal fireworks, and guide their children to stay away from these dangerous activities.

Hanoi recorded an additional 608 dengue fever cases in one week.

According to information from the Hanoi City Center for Disease Control (CDC), in the week from November 29 to December 6, Hanoi recorded 608 cases of dengue fever, an increase of 23 cases compared to the previous week. The cases were distributed across 30 districts, towns, and communes in the city.

Some areas with a high number of patients include Ha Dong (88 cases), Phuc Tho (41 cases), Nam Tu Liem (37 cases), Dong Da (32 cases), Thanh Oai (31 cases), Thanh Tri (30 cases) and Thuong Tin (30 cases).

From the beginning of 2024 to the present, Hanoi has recorded a total of 8,432 cases of dengue fever, a decrease of 78% compared to the same period in 2023.

Over the past week, Hanoi also recorded 21 dengue fever outbreaks in 11 districts, a decrease of 12 outbreaks compared to the previous week. Cumulatively since the beginning of the year, Hanoi has detected 455 outbreaks, of which 41 are still active.

Besides dengue fever, the city recorded 25 cases of measles last week, the same number as the previous week. Of these, 19 patients had not been vaccinated against measles, 4 patients had been vaccinated, and 2 patients had an unclear vaccination history. The total number of measles cases from the beginning of the year to date is 165, recorded in 27 districts, while there were no cases during the same period in 2023.

The Hanoi CDC notes that the number of measles cases is on the rise, mainly among people who have not been fully vaccinated. It is predicted that more measles cases may be recorded in the coming period.

Along with dengue fever and measles, the city also recorded 26 cases of hand, foot, and mouth disease last week, an increase of 1 case compared to the previous week. The total number of hand, foot, and mouth disease cases from the beginning of 2024 to date is 2,448, a decrease of more than 200 cases compared to the same period in 2023.

Other infectious diseases such as whooping cough, streptococcal infection in pigs, meningococcal disease, Covid-19, tetanus, etc., did not record any cases last week.

Next week, the Hanoi CDC will coordinate with relevant units to monitor and handle measles outbreaks in districts such as Nam Tu Liem, Long Bien, Thanh Xuan, and Ba Dinh.

At the same time, the diphtheria and tetanus (Td) vaccination campaign will continue to be implemented in the districts of Bac Tu Liem, Dong Anh, Phuc Tho, Ba Dinh, Thanh Tri, and Thanh Xuan.

The Hanoi CDC also advised district, county, and town health centers to strengthen surveillance and epidemiological investigations, and collect samples for testing in suspected measles cases. Dengue fever outbreaks need to be promptly contained and handled according to regulations.

In addition, continue reviewing the measles vaccination history of children aged 1-5 years and organize supplementary vaccinations for children who have not received all the required doses. Simultaneously, administer the Td vaccine to 7-year-old children who have not received all the tetanus and diphtheria-containing vaccines, as directed by the Ministry of Health.
