Mr. Pham Ngoc Dong was appointed to the position of director, after the hospital had been without a director for 1 year and 6 months.

Mr. Dong (born in 1969, from Hanoi ) graduated as a doctor in 1992 and received his PhD in medicine in 2009. He was recognized as an associate professor of medicine by the State Council for Professor Titles in 2019.

Mr. Dong has held the position of Deputy Director in charge of professional affairs at the Central Eye Hospital from 2017 to the present. From May 2024, he has been the Deputy Director in charge of hospital management and operations.

Previously, in August 2023, while serving as director of the Central Eye Hospital, Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Xuan Hiep submitted a request for early retirement due to health reasons, which was approved by the Ministry of Health.

The Ministry of Health also assigned a deputy head of the Personnel and Organization Department to take charge of the hospital, and then assigned Mr. Dong to be in charge until now, before officially appointing him as director.

The hospital's personnel organization is unstable, leading to difficulties in organizing medical examinations and treatment at the Central Eye Hospital in the past. At times, the hospital had to drastically reduce the number of surgeries due to the inability to purchase supplies.

Upon receiving the decision from the Ministry of Health, Mr. Dong expressed his gratitude to the board of directors and the entire staff of the Central Eye Hospital for their trust in nominating him for this new role.

"For the hospital, this is a crucial moment, marking the end of a 1 year and 6 month period without a director. For me personally, this is a great honor but also a very heavy responsibility to fulfill," Mr. Dong shared.

Minister of Health Dao Hong Lan, along with the Ministry, requested the Party Committee and leaders of the Central Eye Hospital to review the hospital's development orientation regarding professional development, facilities, and human resource training... to meet the increasing demand of the people for specialized eye examination and treatment.

Implementing new techniques and methods, proactively upgrading, repairing, and supplementing medical equipment contributes to the modernization of facilities and equipment.

Simultaneously, focus on training, improving professional capacity, and enhancing the service attitude of the hospital. Effectively carry out professional guidance and support, technology transfer, scientific research, and hospital management, ensuring transparency and accountability.

The National Eye Hospital is a leading medical facility specializing in ophthalmology, with extensive experience in treating eye injuries, corneal transplantation, phaco surgery, and refractive error correction surgery.

However, for a period of time, the hospital was severely short of supplies, many procedures had to be temporarily suspended, or patients had to be transferred to other hospitals, including private hospitals.
