On December 4, the Pediatric Urology Center of Children's Hospital 1 (HCMC) was recognized as an excellent Pediatric Urology Center in Vietnam by the International Volunteer in Urology (IVUmed) - a US humanitarian medical organization (operating with the goal of bringing high-quality urological care services worldwide ).
In 1999, baby TD, only 9 months old, was diagnosed with congenital bladder exstrophy. In Vietnam at that time, Children's Hospital 1 was the only unit that could perform surgery to correct this defect.
"Thanks to the hospital's surgical team, after 25 years, he is healthy, studying and has a family," D.'s father shared. This case opened the hospital's proud journey of 35 years of treating and surgically treating genitourinary malformations.
Mr. Ngo Ngoc Quang Minh - Director of Children's Hospital 1 - said this is the third center of the hospital to achieve the international title of excellence, after the Cleft Lip and Palate Center and the Pediatric Cardiology Center.
Since 1990, the US Interplast group (the predecessor of today's IVUmed) has come to Vietnam and selected the hospital to support and train surgical treatment for children with congenital malformations.
With the guidance of the world's leading pediatric urology experts, the hospital's team of doctors quickly approached surgeries from basic to complex, mastering and performing almost perfectly the most difficult techniques in pediatric genitourinary plastic surgery at a time when almost no other center in the country could do so.
Over the past 35 years, the hospital has been able to access and treat most congenital abnormalities of the genitourinary system such as hydronephrosis, double ureter, genital malformations... and especially areas such as external bladder, hypospadias have reached the leading level in the country and on par with the world.

Dr. Le Thanh Hung - Head of the Department of Nephrology and Urology, Children's Hospital 1 - said that in less than a decade, from 2019 to now, the number of examinations and treatments at the center has increased from 3,000 to more than 12,000 per year.
In total, the center has received more than 50,000 pediatric patients and successfully performed more than 8,000 surgeries, including thousands of complicated cases, despite having to go through a difficult period of the COVID-19 pandemic. Notably, the complication rate has always been maintained at an extremely low level, affirming the safety and optimal treatment effectiveness.
The hospital also regularly supports hospitals in many localities and is invited to participate in many difficult surgeries across the country. The most recent is the rare pelvic conjoined complex surgery of Truc Nhi - Dieu Nhi, one of the most difficult surgeries to separate conjoined twins in Southeast Asia.
"In addition, we are also completing the pediatric kidney transplant project, which has been evaluated in phase 1, and are ready to share patients with Children's Hospital 2 to jointly address the current huge need," said Dr. Hung.
