Recently, an expedition team from Jungle Boss Co., Ltd. (in Phong Nha town, Bo Trach district, Quang Binh province) discovered a mysterious lake in a side branch of Thung Cave, part of the Hung Thoong cave system in Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park.
Located about 1km from the cave entrance, this lake has a surface area of approximately 100m2 and is surrounded by unique stalactite columns. What's special is that it sits more than 15m higher than the main underground river branch inside the cave, appearing to be "suspended" on the cave wall, hence its name, the "Suspended Lake".
Cave expert Nguyen Van Uy (born in 1988), Director of Safety at Jungle Boss, shared that the discovery of the Lơ Lửng lake was incredibly special. Previously, despite numerous surveys of the area, even swimming along the underground river, the team had failed to discover the lake due to limited visibility.
However, during their exploration trip in May 2024, the team decided to start earlier than on previous trips. Thanks to the smaller temperature difference, the mist inside the cave was less dense, and visibility improved. At that moment, they unexpectedly noticed a "dark spot" on the other side of the cave path.

After searching, the team discovered a narrow passage high up, close to the cave wall, less than 1 meter wide. They conquered this narrow path and named it "Midway Passage".
"The deeper we went into the Lung Trung gorge, the more surprised we were to see a turquoise lake, bottomless and never drying up during the dry season – a rare sight in other calcium lakes within the caves of Phong Nha - Ke Bang," Mr. Uy shared.
The highlight of Lo Lung Lake is a stalactite formation hanging suspended right above the water's surface – a rare type of stalactite that requires many factors for formation and transformation.
The Hung Thoong cave system is known to be one of the most pristine areas of Phong Nha - Ke Bang, discovered by local people in 2009. Located deep within the strictly protected zone of Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park, it is surrounded by millions-of-years-old limestone mountains and primeval forest.
The Hung Thoong cave system comprises numerous caves such as: Tron Cave, Hung Cave, Thung Cave, Nightmare sinkhole... According to experts, this is a unique and very distinctive cave system. It is named Hung Thoong because it surrounds the stream of the same name.
According to Jungle Boss General Director, Mr. Le Luu Dung, this discovery will contribute to increasing the attractiveness of adventure tourism exploring Hung Thoong, a unique destination in the core area of Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park.
