On the final day of the 2024 World Championship, Tran Thanh Luc caused a major upset by winning convincingly 50-32 against world number one Dick Jaspers (Netherlands) in the semi-final. The Vietnamese player performed exceptionally well, averaging over 3 points per inning against Jaspers. However, in the final match that afternoon, against the high-class and enthusiastic Cho Myung-woo (South Korea), the Vietnamese player suffered a defeat with a score of 23-50 after 20 innings. Tran Thanh Luc won the silver medal at the World Championship in the individual event, the most prestigious tournament in the World Billiards Association (UMB) competition system. This was Thanh Luc's first time competing in the World Championship. Although he couldn't win the top position at the tournament held in Binh Thuan , this is still considered a great success in his career. This is also his best achievement after many years of competing in international 3-cushion billiards tournaments (World Cup, World Championship).
Prior to the 2024 World Championship, Tran Thanh Luc was ranked 20th in the UMB rankings with 128 points. With his runner-up finish in this tournament, the Vietnamese player gained 54 points, bringing his total to 182. He will certainly improve his ranking in the UMB standings and is likely to break into the top 15 in the world.
Furthermore, Tran Thanh Luc's achievement once again affirms the position of Vietnamese 3-cushion carom billiards on the international stage. In the two most recent World Championships, Vietnamese players advanced deep into the tournaments and were among the medal winners. At the 2023 World Championship held in Ankara (Türkiye), two Vietnamese players won top positions, with Bao Phuong Vinh winning the championship (in his first participation) and Tran Quyet Chien finishing second.
