Shocked, stressed and cried many times...

- How did you feel when you first came to "What Remains" 2025?

I have known about Dieu Con Mai organized by VietNamNet newspaper for a long time. The program has played a very good role in evoking national pride, being an artistic bridge between the present and the past.

Every year, I still watch and always wish to stand on stage and perform live once.

This year, I was so surprised to receive an invitation to participate that I was overwhelmed with joy. I often joke that maybe the universe heard my prayers.

Being able to appear on a special stage and sing at the sacred moment of the whole country is a great honor for a young singer like me.

- What are you preparing for the performance "Sending you a poem hat" that will be performed on stage soon?

When I was assigned this song, I had a question for Mr. Tran Manh Hung - the program's music director about the title.

The image of the conical hat in the poem has always been associated with Hue , but why did the author write about Nghe An in the song?

When I researched, I learned that musician Le Viet Hoa had composed music from a famous poem from decades ago. With his talent, experience and life experience, the musician transformed himself into each word to write a beautiful, passionate melody for the work.

I am originally from Binh Tri Thien, Hue folk music flows deeply in me so I will try to bring elegance, gentleness and also calmness to the song.

- What is your current job?

Previously, I was a lecturer at Hue Academy of Music. In 2016, I moved to Hanoi to live and work as a freelance artist.

Currently I collaborate with a number of theaters, participating in performances at major national events and programs.

I still maintain my teaching job to avoid missing my job, mainly teaching some familiar students at home.

In addition, I also have a Hue Ao Dai business. This is a job that I do to earn extra income, and at the same time, I want to honor and preserve the traditional Ao Dai culture.

- Hue singing is not easy, and for Hue singing to survive in the capital is even more difficult. Was it difficult for you to shape the identity and name of Bach Tra in a market where many singers choose folk singing as a career?

Difficulties are inevitable! Sometimes, I feel lost and confused with the choice. The uncertainty and the resentment that I don't know who to confide in make me question and doubt.

My father was an artist, so I used to confide in him. But times are different, and I don't want to upset my parents, so if something happens, I try to overcome it myself.

Luckily the road I have traveled so far has not been full of twists and turns or rocks. On the contrary, being alone is a good thing because the road I walk alone is wide open and there is little competition.

After 10 years in this profession, I'm glad I can still make a living with it, and have a certain position to be proud of with my family and friends.

I am not the ambitious type so I can manage any income. As the old saying goes, “a little bit of clothing keeps you warm.”

The singer once went through a period of depression due to losing his voice for more than half a year.

- What was the most difficult period you ever faced?

That was the period when I had just given birth and lost my voice for more than half a year. During that time, I was almost speechless, no matter how hard I tried to open my larynx, I still couldn't sing.

Women after giving birth are sensitive, let alone singers, so the changes in appearance and voice made me fall into a deeper hole.

Sitting watching my colleagues perform on TV, I desperately wanted to sing. I was shocked, stressed and cried many times, locking myself in my room not wanting to see anyone.

There was a time when I thought I should find another job because if I couldn't sing, it would be like retiring.

I decided to go to several places to see a doctor, and was advised that this was a hormonal change. I discussed with experts and colleagues about training methods, and from there I gradually regained my voice.

Actually, my voice is not the most stable at this time because I am still in the process of recovery. Compared to before, my performance is only about 70%. However, I accept the reality, do not complain or think negatively.

My voice may not be the same as before, but in return I have deeper experiences and emotions.

Confidence is not a copy of anyone!

- As a student of singer Anh Tho, what did you learn from your teacher?

I had a period of time when Ms. Anh Tho accompanied me and taught me vocal techniques. She always encouraged me, saying that I had a good voice and talent, and that I should try to develop my strengths in Hue folk songs because this is a new field that not many singers in Hanoi are involved in.

I released my first album or moved to Hanoi to start a career thanks to Ms. Tho's encouragement. I learned from her not only about expertise but also about enthusiasm and passion in work and life.

- How do you have your own style and not be called a "copy" of previous artists?

Sao Mai contest has folk music genre, so each season creates many similar versions. As for me, it is Ca Hue, so talking about regional quality, the sound is different.

Many young singers worry and fear being compared to their seniors, but I think differently. I see this as motivation and do not feel pressured by different generations and eras.

I try to improve, innovate and not repeat myself. I believe that each person will have their own way of feeling and expressing themselves in each work and not be a copy of anyone else.

How to perform well, fully convey the content and message of the song to the audience, that is what I am concerned about.

- Many folk singers have recently taken advantage of the media, some have filmed clips, built their own channels and attracted millions of views on social networks. But you are too closed, does that make it difficult for the audience to approach and pay attention?

In this day and age, media is a powerful means of support. I believe that artists who want to be famous must first have talent.

Ultimately, each person has a path, the important thing is that the choice is appropriate and suitable.

I chose a peaceful artistic career, not chaotic. To be able to live with my profession, true to what I learned and my passion is already happiness.

- Is singer Bach Tra much different in her family than when she is on stage?

It is not easy for a woman to fulfill her family responsibilities and try to be a singer. Outside of performing hours, I still try to be close to and accompany my children. My two children, the eldest is about to enter first grade, and the youngest is 2 years old.

No matter how busy I am, I always believe that a happy family is the key to a smooth work. My children's childhood and happiness are what I always think about.

Honestly, I'm not used to talking too much about home or idealizing marriage. Happiness, joy and sadness, you feel it yourself, there's no need to show everything.

- As a woman in the family, how do you rate yourself?

It is too difficult to rate myself. I consider myself a pretty capable person, I like to cook my specialties such as: Hue beef noodle soup, rice noodles, mussel rice... My joy is seeing my whole family sitting together and eating.

Women play an important role in connecting the family. In my free time, I invite everyone to travel to experience life, as a way to preserve beautiful memories for myself and my loved ones.

Bach Tra sings "Words of the departed"
