The road surface along the Ong Ta canal has subsided, posing a safety hazard to traffic.
The Ong Ta Canal renovation project is one of Can Tho City's key projects, aiming to beautify the urban area, improve the living environment, and improve drainage in the city's inner districts. The project has received attention and guidance from leaders at all levels and relevant agencies. However, from the very beginning of the construction process, the contractor has faced strong opposition from residents due to their irresponsible work practices.
Mr. Nguyen Hoang Nam, a resident whose house is located next to the Ong Ta canal, angrily stated: "When the construction unit brought in heavy machinery such as excavators and pile drivers, our houses shook constantly. Initially, small cracks appeared, but now my family's house is sinking and tilting. Despite this, my family doesn't dare to repair it because we're waiting for the construction unit to come and inspect it, draw up a report, and provide assistance for repairs."
According to Mr. Nam, in early 2024, the construction unit began building a dam to block the flow of water at the beginning of Ong Ta canal to carry out dredging, pile driving, and concrete pouring for the embankment along the canal. Since then, the houses of many residents near the construction site have been affected. After the incident, the construction unit surveyed the damage but did not assess the extent of the damage to determine compensation for the residents. Significantly, since June 2024, the Ong Ta canal construction unit has withdrawn from the site without rectifying the problems for the residents.
In addition, the local road along Ong Ta canal has also been severely damaged due to the impact of the project's construction. Mr. Nguyen Van Hung, a resident of Area 2, said: "Previously, the concrete road along Ong Ta canal was about 3 meters wide, with a smooth surface, facilitating convenient trade. In early 2024, the construction unit brought in heavy machinery to carry out the project, causing the concrete road surface to subside and tilt, posing a potential risk of accidents for people traveling on it."
In response to this situation, residents of Area 2, Tan An Ward, have complained and petitioned the local authorities, the investor, and the construction unit, but the issue remains unresolved. Residents of Area 2 continue to petition the People's Committee of Can Tho City and relevant departments and agencies to direct the investor and construction unit to promptly inspect and assess the extent of damage to houses and roads and to develop a plan for timely remediation.
