The Center for Elephant Conservation, Animal Rescue and Forest Management and Protection (Department of Agriculture and Environment of Dak Lak province) has just issued a warning about the appearance of wild elephants and warned about preventing human-elephant conflicts.
According to the Center for Elephant Conservation, Animal Rescue and Forest Management and Protection of Dak Lak Province ( Elephant Conservation Center ), recently, through monitoring and supervising wild elephants, the Center recorded about 2 wild elephants regularly appearing and looking for food at the forest areas of Ranger Station No. 6 and Ranger Station No. 12 in Yok Don National Park and in sub-areas 439, 460 and 462 in the area managed by the Elephant Conservation Center.
Two wild elephants caused some damage to the swidden production area of Ea Mar hamlet, Buon Don commune. Specifically, Mr. Y Uy Knul’s household suffered damage to about 0.3 hectares of cassava; Mr. Ma Chan My’s household had its fence destroyed by elephants and about 0.2 hectares of cassava. In particular, the wild elephant attacked the elephant Kham Sinh owned by Y Tep Bu Dam, injuring the elephant’s tail…
The above incident shows that the risk of conflict between wild elephants and domestic elephants, people and property is at a high level. To ensure safety and proactively prevent elephant-human conflicts during the time when elephants continue to appear, the Elephant Conservation Center recommends that businesses and people in the area need to be highly vigilant when traveling and producing near forest areas and fields bordering sub-areas 439, 460, 462 of the Elephant Conservation Center and Ranger Station No. 12 of Yok Don National Park.
For people, do not sleep at night in the forest or in huts, especially in places where elephants have been recorded. Do not go fishing at night in ponds, lakes, rivers and streams in the above mentioned areas, this is a dangerous time, easy to encounter elephants because wild elephants often move and forage at night.
For domesticated elephant owners and mahouts, strictly manage domesticated elephants and strictly limit the introduction of domesticated elephants into forest areas where wild elephants are present. If domesticated elephants are released in the area, consider temporarily moving domesticated elephants away from high-risk areas to avoid the risk of conflict or attack by wild elephants.
For businesses operating in the area, it is necessary to closely monitor information about wild elephants, notify tourists and employees of the unit to proactively prevent. Do not organize activities to take tourists into forests, rivers and streams in areas where wild elephants appear.
The Elephant Conservation Center recommends that the People's Committee of Buon Don commune and representatives of villages and hamlets coordinate to widely propagate so that people can proactively prevent, ensure safety for people and property and contribute to protecting the wild elephant population.
