On the morning of May 27th, the Vietnamese sepak takraw team entered the final match against Japan in the men's four-person event. Prior to that, the team had convincingly defeated Thailand 2-0 in the semi-finals.
This is a proud achievement for Vietnamese sepak takraw, as Thailand is still considered the absolute king of the sport. Especially in the men's events, Vietnam has historically not been highly regarded.
After their victory against Thailand, the Vietnamese team failed to extend their surprise run, losing 0-2 (7-15, 10-15) to the powerful Japanese team.
Japan got off to a great start and won the first set easily. In the second set, Vietnam led 8-6 at one point, but Japan scored a series of crucial points to come back and win.
Although they couldn't win the championship, this is still a historic silver medal for Vietnam in the men's sepak takraw event.
Earlier, the women's sepak takraw team also won a silver medal in the team event (3-person team) after losing to Thailand 0-2 (7-15, 7-15) in the final held on the evening of July 26.
This is an area where Thailand has always dominated, so Vietnam's defeat is understandable.
Vietnam still has hopes of winning a world gold medal in the women's four-person sepak takraw final – another match against Thailand, scheduled for 2 PM this afternoon, July 27th. This is a highly anticipated match for Vietnamese sepak takraw.
