Helping children reach their full growth potential is the desire of every parent. However, statistics show that nearly one-fifth of Vietnamese children are experiencing stunted growth compared to their age, meaning they are suffering from malnutrition. To improve children's health and stature, numerous doctors have participated in a series of workshops organized by the Vietnam Pediatric Association to apply the Guidelines for Screening, Assessment, and Nutritional Intervention for Pediatric Patients.
Early recognition of malnutrition and stunting in children and its consequences.
Malnutrition and stunting negatively impact children's health, intelligence, and stature in adulthood. Early screening and timely nutritional intervention are optimal approaches, especially in the first five years of life. The Vietnam Pediatric Association recommends strengthening screening and early intervention for malnourished children and those at risk, both while hospitalized and after discharge.
Assessing children's growth based on visual estimations of weight and height is quite common, but this is inaccurate. The Vietnam Pediatric Association recommends that healthcare professionals and parents regularly check and assess their children's growth using standardized tools. Timely intervention is necessary when growth problems are detected in children.

Associate Professor Dr. Tran Minh Dien, President of the Vietnam Pediatric Association and Director of the National Children's Hospital, emphasized: " Early screening, nutritional assessment, and timely intervention are optimal solutions, especially the first five years of life, which is the golden period for height-related interventions. Malnourished children need continuous attention and care from the hospital to the community, giving them the opportunity to improve their health and stature."
Dr. Phan Huu Phuc, Secretary General of the Vietnam Pediatric Association and Deputy Director of the National Children's Hospital, hopes that this new guideline will support doctors and parents in providing proper and timely nutritional care for children. A good nutritional foundation will help children achieve more comprehensive growth in health, stature, and intelligence.
Providing proper nutrition to ensure stunted children don't miss the "golden period" for growth.
Nutritional intervention with balanced and adequate oral nutritional supplementation (ONS) – medical nutritional foods – is an effective measure to improve growth in children.
Information presented at the conference highlighted 25 international clinical studies from Abbott involving over 3,000 children, including Vietnamese children, showing that medical nutrition helps children improve growth in height, weight, and immunity, quickly catching up and maintaining healthy growth. Optimal growth in children is a solid foundation for developing stature and intelligence in adulthood.
Medical nutritional interventions have been shown to help children improve their growth.
Experts recommend that when choosing oral nutritional supplements (ONS), consider the following criteria: proven effectiveness through scientific research, recognition by regulatory agencies, medical nutritional food status, and a formula that provides a complete and balanced supply of nutrients such as high-quality protein, arginine, vitamin K2, essential vitamins and minerals, as well as probiotics and prebiotics… to support growth and help children develop healthily.
Children with stunted growth need proper and timely nutritional care to have a chance to improve their stature.
Collaborating with the Vietnam Pediatric Association (VPA) is one of Abbott's efforts to address the challenges of malnutrition and improve the stature of Vietnamese children. The company focuses on helping Vietnamese people live the healthiest and most fulfilling lives through life-changing products and technologies across various fields, from nutrition and diagnostics to medical devices and pharmaceuticals.
In many countries, Abbott's Center for Nutritional Solutions (ACMS) leverages the company's scientific and healthcare expertise, collaborating with partners to develop initiatives that help detect, address, and prevent malnutrition. This contributes to Abbott's Sustainable Development Plan 2030, which aims to improve the lives of more than 3 billion people annually by the end of this decade.
