On the morning of December 8, the Vietnamese basketball team departed from Ho Chi Minh City to Thailand to participate in the 33rd SEA Games. The men's team includes Christopher Dierker, Dinh Thanh Tam, To Ngoc Khanh, Dang Thai Hung, Young Duong Justin, Tran Dang Khoa, Le Khac Dang Khoa, Du Minh An, Huynh Truc Nhan, Pham Hien Tai, Nguyen Huynh Phu Vinh, Vo Kim Ban, Nguyen Phuc Vinh, Nguyen Anh Kiet and Dau Trung Kien.
The women's team includes Bui Thu Hang, Dang Thi Thuy Hang, Mau Thi Nhu Quynh, Tran Thi Thao Huong, Truong Thao Vy, Truong Thao My, Nguyen Thi Tieu Duy, Bui Kim Nhan, Van Thu Thao, Dang Thi Cam Linh, Lieu Yen Nhi, Tran Thi Yen Van, Nguyen Thi Thuy Tien, Nguyen Thi Ngoc Tram, Nguyen Thi Lan Anh.

The Vietnam basketball team has a few regrettable absences, partly because of the generational transition, partly because of changes related to the competition status of athletes from host Thailand. Accordingly, in the 5x5 event, players must be recognized as domestic players according to FIBA regulations. Although FIBA regulations still allow the registration of 1 naturalized player in the list, the SEA Games is not part of the FIBA tournament system, so the number of naturalized players in the 5x5 event is decided by the host.
This regulation means that the two sisters Truong Thao Vy and Thao My, the mainstays of the Vietnamese women's team for the past three years, will be absent from the 5x5 event and will only participate in the 3x3 event.
According to the schedule, the 3x3 men's and women's events will only take place on December 10 and 11. The group stage matches will be held on December 10 and the semi-finals and finals will be held on December 11. In the 3x3 event, the Vietnamese men's team is in Group B with the Philippines, Laos, and Malaysia. The Vietnamese women's team is in Group B with Singapore, Thailand, and Laos.
The 5x5 event was held from December 13 to December 19. The Vietnamese men's team was in Group A with the Philippines and Malaysia. The Vietnamese women's team was in Group A with Thailand and Indonesia.
