Celebrate the Lunar New Year in style with Chinese-style copper-wrapped bonsai trees: Some trees cost tens of millions of Vietnamese dong.
Every Lunar New Year, Vietnamese people eagerly search for unique decorative items that symbolize good fortune and prosperity. This year, a new trend is attracting the attention of many art lovers: copper coiled bonsai.
Copper wire bonsai, also known as copper-aluminum wire bonsai, is the art of shaping bonsai trees by bending and wrapping flexible metal wires.
Depending on the complexity, each copper-wrapped bonsai takes 3-4 days or 10-15 days to complete.

Mr. Do Dang Tuan, an artisan from Canh Nau craft village in Hanoi , after studying and working in China, brought the art of copper-wrapped bonsai to Vietnam. With creativity and skill, he combines copper-alloyed aluminum wire with precious woods such as cypress, pine, agarwood, and red sandalwood, creating unique and exquisite works.
The main material that creates the unique beauty of copper-wrapped bonsai is copper-aluminum wire, imported from China and treated with modern electrostatic powder coating technology. These wires are not only highly durable but also come in a variety of colors, giving them a vibrant and luxurious appearance.
To complete a piece, the artist typically takes between 3 and 15 days, depending on the complexity of the design. Notably, each bonsai pot is equipped with an under-counter lighting system, creating a shimmering effect that attracts attention at night.
Although only recently appearing in Vietnam in the last few years, copper-wrapped bonsai has quickly won the hearts of art lovers due to its novelty and sophistication. At the spring flower market in front of the My Dinh National Stadium, Mr. Do Dang Tuan's stall is always crowded with visitors. A special feature is that each product comes with a 5-year warranty – if the paint peels off, customers will receive a new product. Mr. Tuan shared that in China, the hobby of copper-wrapped bonsai has developed with large-scale villages specializing in producing the raw materials. However, in Vietnam, this art form is still quite new.

Bringing this art form back to Vietnam, Mr. Tuan has created his own unique style, combining aluminum wire with precious woods such as cypress, pine, agarwood, and red sandalwood to create exquisite and luxurious works. Not only does he directly conceive the ideas and craft the tree trunks, but he also collaborates with skilled carpenters in Canh Nau village to complete the flower wrapping and woodworking processes, creating employment opportunities for many people.
In terms of price, bonsai trees with copper coils also vary to suit a wide range of customers. Smaller, compact pieces, used for decorating tea tables, cost from 1 to 2 million VND. Meanwhile, larger pieces, placed on pedestals in the living room, cost from 3 million VND upwards. For custom-designed bonsai pots, 1 meter or taller, the price can reach tens of millions of VND.
