US House Speaker Mike Johnson survives impeachment vote

The Democratic and Republican parties voted 359-43 to retain Johnson as Speaker of the House, aiming to avoid a repeat of the chaos that occurred in October when Republicans ousted his predecessor, Kevin McCarthy.

Former President Donald Trump, who is representing the Republican Party in the presidential race, also said in a social media post on Wednesday that this "is not the time" for Republicans to try to remove their own Speaker of the House.

Meanwhile, Johnson said after the vote: "I appreciate the trust my colleagues placed in me in bringing down this misguided effort." Earlier, MP Greene had criticized Johnson for a series of compromises with the Democrats.

Johnson had previously angered hardliners in the House of Representatives by approving a bipartisan budget bill and aid package for US allies, including Ukraine, without requiring strict security measures for the US-Mexico border that Democrats rejected.
