There is still 1 month left until the Lunar New Year, but at gardens in Van Giang district, Hung Yen province, tangerine trees shaped like gold bars and water hyacinths worth tens of millions of dong have been ordered by customers.

To have a large kumquat tree that can be bent into a giant water hyacinth, people have to take care of it for up to 5 years.

Mr. Nguyen Tri, a long-time gardener, said: "This year, the new model of the lucky vase with the meaning of attracting wealth and bringing prosperity to customers is sought after by many people. It takes 3 days to create a kumquat tree with a lucky vase, and a tree with a large diameter can take up to 1 week."

"This year, the gardener created about 30 lucky vase trees, and up to now, almost all have been sold, the price ranges from 15 million to 20 million VND/tree," Mr. Tri added.

The tangerines are shaped into a lucky water hyacinth, about 3-4m high and 1.2m in diameter. Most of the trees are cared for so that the fruit ripens in time for the Lunar New Year.

In addition to its unique shape, tangerines must also have berries and buds, yellow and fresh green leaves to represent fertility and growth," said Mr. Nguyen Van Thanh (garden owner in Lien Nghia commune, Van Giang district, Hung Yen province).

A pair of dragons tens of meters long, priced at 50 million VND, was also ordered by a customer in Ha Nam province in mid-December.

The creativity and skillful hands of long-time bonsai growers in Van Giang district have shaped tangerine trees into unique shapes of gold bars, hearts, parasols, and vases, priced from 40 to 45 million VND/pair, but still attracting customers to buy during this year's Lunar New Year.
