Standardizing growing areas to bring agricultural products far and wide

(GLO)- To penetrate the billion-people Chinese market and many other international markets, Gia Lai agricultural products, especially in the western part of the province, are being standardized from growing areas, packaging facilities to traceability.

The proactive spirit of businesses and the support of the government are creating a sustainable production-export ecosystem, helping to enhance agricultural product brands and increase competitiveness in the market.

Standardize growing areas for official export

In Gia Lai , many cooperatives, businesses and farmers are stepping up the development of growing area codes and standard packaging facilities. This is a key requirement to help products pass technical requirements at border gates.

In fact, many Vietnamese businesses have encountered difficulties when exporting to China due to lack of growing area codes or poor supply chain management.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Diem Hang - Vice President of the Vietnam Agricultural Enterprise Council, General Director of Vinanutrifood Binh Dinh Company - said: "The biggest weakness at present is that enterprises have not managed the raw material area well. When the products arrive at customs, many shipments often encounter problems because they do not meet the requirements for traceability and growing area codes."

Gia Lai possesses many outstanding natural advantages. With 977 thousand hectares of agricultural land, of which 753 thousand hectares are basalt red soil and yellow red soil, the province has conditions to develop many types of industrial crops, fruit trees and high-value medicinal plants.

Key products have made their mark on the international market, typically: 107 thousand hectares of coffee, output of 333,256 tons, of which 56,691 hectares meet organic standards, Rainforest Alliance, 4C; 7,850 hectares of banana, output of 316,220 tons, of which 3,792 hectares meet GlobalGAP standards; 5,650 hectares of passion fruit, output of 213,150 tons, 1,153 hectares meet VietGAP standards; 8,500 hectares of durian, output of 57,725 tons, of which 1,082 hectares meet GlobalGAP standards, 741 hectares meet VietGAP standards...

To date, Gia Lai has granted 248 growing area codes and 40 packaging facilities with a capacity of 1,800 tons/day. This is an impressive number, demonstrating comprehensive standardization efforts, creating a solid foundation for Gia Lai agricultural products to be officially exported, reducing dependence on informal exports which are inherently risky.

Ms. Lu Le Phuong - Deputy Director of Business of Gulf of Tonkin Investment Group (Guangxi, China) commented: "Chinese enterprises are very interested in products with transparent origins. If these requirements are met, Gia Lai agricultural products can completely expand their exports to the Chinese market."

Proactive businesses, supportive government

In addition to standardizing production, businesses are increasingly proactive in expanding their markets and directly approaching international consumers. A typical example is VCU Joint Stock Company (Chu Prong Commune), which recently participated in CAFEEX Shenzhen 2025 - the largest and most prestigious coffee fair in China, taking place from August 22 to 24 in Shenzhen.

By participating in the event, VCU Joint Stock Company not only introduced Gia Lai coffee but also connected with many manufacturers, roasters and large coffee chains in China and other countries. This is an opportunity for businesses to promote their brands and affirm the position of Vietnamese coffee on the world coffee map.

Mr. Nguyen Tien Dinh - Director of VCU Joint Stock Company - shared: "To officially export to China, the Company needs to prove clear origin and transparent documents such as GACC certification. Currently, VCU has been granted GACC for roasted coffee beans and is completing it for green coffee beans. This is an important step to help the Company meet strict standards, while bringing products closer to international consumers."

Not only stopping at finding output, international fairs also help Gia Lai enterprises grasp trends and understand the needs of the Chinese market, which is diverse but has high demands on quality, packaging and traceability.

Meanwhile, Gia Lai province is also accompanying businesses. According to Mr. Duong Minh Duc, Director of the Department of Industry and Trade, Gia Lai has many key agricultural products. To facilitate businesses to access the Chinese market, the province is promoting the issuance of codes for growing areas and packaging facilities. This is an important condition to help businesses feel secure in exporting officially.

At the conference on trade promotion, trade connection, and export of key agricultural products to the Chinese market (held on August 18 in Pleiku ward), Standing Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Tuan Thanh emphasized: "China is currently one of Vietnam's largest trading partners, with two-way turnover in 2024 reaching about 171 billion USD.

For Gia Lai, this is an important agricultural and forestry export market but also places strict requirements on quality and origin. In the coming time, the province will focus on standardizing growing areas, promoting deep processing and implementing a "one-stop" mechanism to support businesses from production to transactions.
