In the context of a shortage of information security (InfoSec) experts, Kaspersky conducted a survey on "Portrait of the modern information security expert" to clarify the causes of this situation.

The survey was conducted by more than 1,000 InfoSec professionals from Asia-Pacific, Europe, North America and Latin America. The results show that the gap in security human resources in the labor market is currently nearly 4 million people.

According to Kaspersky, 41% of companies describe their cybersecurity teams as currently severely understaffed. This situation is most prevalent in Russia, Latin American countries and the Asia-Pacific region.

The most in-demand positions are information security researchers and malware analysts. More than 40% of companies say these are the hardest positions to fill. The growing demand for these positions is seen in Europe, Russia and Latin America.

The report also noted a shortage of human resources to manage security operations centers (SOCs). In particular, human resources in the two positions of information security assessment and network security were assessed at a low level. According to the survey, the position with the least number of recruitments but still high recruitment demand is threat intelligence (32%).

Looking at demand by sector, the report found that the government sector currently lacks nearly half (46%) of the security workforce needed to combat the activities of hacker gangs and cybercriminals.

The telecommunications industry also saw a shortage of security professionals at 39%, followed by retail, wholesale and healthcare with 37% of vacancies. The industries with the fewest InfoSec vacancies were IT (31%) and financial services (27%).

“To reduce the shortage of highly qualified InfoSec specialists, companies should offer better salaries and working conditions, and invest in training and updating new knowledge,” commented Vladimir Dashchenko, head of security operations at Kaspersky ICS CERT.

However, survey results show that these measures are not always suitable for the needs and conditions of businesses.

Due to the rapid changes in the IT market in some developing countries, the labor market is unable to provide the necessary skills and expertise in a short period of time. In contrast, there is no significant shortage of InfoSec professionals in regions with developed economies and mature businesses.
