According to VPSA, in 2022 Vietnam exported approximately 5,000 tons of chili peppers, with a value of about 11.9 million USD; by 2023, the value increased to 20 million USD, corresponding to more than 10,000 tons; and in the first nearly 10 months of this year, export revenue surged to 22.2 million USD.
While South Korea and the US previously consumed a lot of Vietnamese chili peppers, since 2022 the leading export markets have been China and Laos, accounting for 33% and 43% of the market share respectively.
On October 31st, Tuoi Tre Online interviewed a leader of the Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association (VPSA) about the situation of chili exports. The leader acknowledged that the two biggest "customers" for Vietnamese chili currently are China and Laos.
Explaining this, the VPSA leader said: "China has Sichuan hot pot as a traditional dish. This dish is spicy and infused with the flavors of chili and pepper. Especially in the cold winter, Chinese people eat more spicy hot pot."
Therefore, in the months leading up to the end of the year, China imports a lot of chili peppers, especially dried chili peppers. Previously, the majority of China's supply came from Indian chili peppers, but due to supply shortages, this market has turned to consuming a large quantity of Vietnamese chili peppers."
Meanwhile, the spicy flavor of various dishes is an indispensable part of Lao cuisine , as Ms. Nguyen Thi Xuan (Ho Chi Minh City, a businesswoman who purchases agricultural products for export) stated:
"People in Laos are very good at eating spicy food, and dried chili peppers are a key ingredient in their dishes. Chili peppers are collected in Vietnam and exported to China and Laos, where they make crispy fried chili, pickled chili, chili sauce, stewed chili, boiled chili, etc. Demand increases every year, and the number of customers seeking long-term contracts is also growing."
According to some experts, Vietnamese chili peppers are popular in markets such as China and Laos because of their high spiciness and diverse varieties, including bird's eye chili, hot chili, and yellow horn chili, all of which are very spicy.
Currently, the domestic market is seeing chili prices ranging from 22,000 to 28,000 VND per kilogram.
Prior to March 2022, fresh chili peppers from Vietnam were exported to China after undergoing quarantine procedures.
In Vietnam, chili peppers grown in Dong Thap province , and especially in Thanh Binh district, are considered the "largest chili pepper growing area in the Mekong Delta".
Vietnam is second only to India in the export of dried chili peppers.
According to VPSA, the world 's chili production in 2020 was approximately 60 million tons, including chili peppers, bell peppers, and green peppers.
Asia is currently the world's largest chili pepper producer, accounting for approximately 80% of global output. Global chili pepper trade is worth around $35 billion annually, comparable to coffee or tea.
The main chili-growing countries are India, Myanmar, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Thailand, Vietnam, Romania, China, Nigeria, and Mexico…
Specifically for dried chili peppers, India is the world's leading producer and exporter, accounting for over 6.11% in 2021, followed by Vietnam, China, and Indonesia.
