The first gold medal for the Vietnamese swimming teams at the 33rd SEA Games came from the men's 200m individual medley. Tran Hung Nguyen brilliantly finished first with a time of 2 minutes 02 seconds 11 to win the gold medal.
Right behind Nguyen was Philippine swimmer Santos with a time of 2 minutes 03 seconds 88. The bronze medal went to another Vietnamese swimmer, Nguyen Quang Thuan, with a time of 2 minutes 04 seconds 19.

In the women's event, swimmer Vo Thi My Tien, despite her best efforts, finished second with a time of 2 minutes 12 seconds 10. The Vietnamese athlete had to accept second place behind the representative from Thailand, thus winning the Silver Medal. The Bronze Medal went to the swimmer from Singapore.
Shortly afterwards, Vietnamese sports received more good news when Nguyen Van Dung brilliantly won, bringing home a gold medal for Vietnam in the men's individual shooting event. Nguyen Van Dung is from Hanoi, and this was also the first time the 51-year-old billiards player participated in a SEA Games.
The achievements of military swimmer Tran Hung Nguyen and billiards player Nguyen Van Dung have raised the total number of gold medals won by Vietnam at the 33rd SEA Games to 4.
